Diet Questions - Weight Gainers and Amino Acids Intake

diet questions Diet Question:
I currently take a weight gainer 3 times daily along with vitamins, creatine, amino acids and zma throughout the day. Is this too many supplements?

diet questions Diet Answer:
First off, I recommend dropping the weight gainer. Most of the weight gainers are packed with sugar and are empty, non-nutrient dense ways of getting your calories. Always focus on quality food for your calories. Focus on getting enough protein throughout the day by choosing lean items like chicken breast, egg whites, turkey breast and fish. Also, make sure to eliminate all empty calories like soda, high sugar fruit juices, candy and fast food. Eat several nutritious meals throughout the day. You will gain several benefits from eating several small meals throughout the day and your body's metabolism will be revved up throughout the day. I would recommend to focus on lean protein sources (chicken breast, turkey breast, egg whites), lean fibrous carbs (broccoli, mushrooms, squash, zucchini) and whole wheat starchy carbs (whole wheat bread, brown rice, etc.). Try to eat every 3 hours and make sure to include a lean protein source in each meal.

Also, drop the amino acids. Amino acids are simply predigested protein. Get your protein by eating real food and stick with these lean protein sources:

  • Chicken breast (skin removed)
  • Turkey breast (skin removed)
  • Egg Whites
  • Fish Fillet (flounder, sole, scrod, cod, etc.)
  • Shellfish (clams, lobster, scallop, shrimp)
  • Lean Beef (top round)
  • Tuna (canned in water)
  • Non-fat cottage cheese
  • Beans (black beans, kidney, chick peas or lentils)

Its also extremely important to keep a diet journal of your nutritional intake. This way you will be able to track where all your calories are coming from and really monitor your intake. You can download our free diet journals here:

You can stick with the vitamins and creatine but I'm not 100% convinced on ZMA. I would drop it for a few weeks and see how you feel (strength, muscle). If you don't feel any change, drop the ZMA also since it will save you money in the long run.
