The name “Tom Yum” originated from Laos and Thailand and the “Gai” means chicken. Tom Yum is also made with prawns instead of chicken and this soup is called “Tom Yum Goong”. The great part of this soup is that its made with very healthy ingredients and a few of them are rather unique. These ingredients include galangal root, kaffir lime leaves, lemongrass and fish sauce.

Galangal is a root that has a citrusy, piney, earthy aroma with hints of cedar and soap in the flavor. Galangal resembles ginger but does not taste anything like it. The kaffir lime is a rough, bumpy green fruit. The leaves can be used fresh or dried and can be stored frozen. The coconut milk gives it a little extra thickness and flavor while still keeping it healthy. Coconut milk is high in saturated fat but it consists of short-chain and medium-chain fatty acids that the body quickly turns into energy instead of storing as fat. So, even though coconut milk is rather high in saturated fat, it can actually help you lose weight! The chicken is packed with protein to support and build lean muscle tissue.

In 2009, I moved to Thailand. Because powerlifting is not popular there and gym memberships can be expensive, I have adapted my workouts to suit the area. I had to get creative. I have looked into bodyweight exercises, and barrel lifting. See my profile page for more information!

  1. Looks more like a Tom Kha Gai soup. Tom Yum uses coconut milk like your recipe, whereas Tom Kha doesn’t. But, looks yummy nonetheless.
