Exercise Questions - Am I a Candidate
For Gastric Bypass Surgery?
Exercise Question: I'm 100 pounds over weight. I've tried everything and
just want to give up. I'm tired of not being able to breath or tie my shoe. I
feel miserable! I'm thinking about having a gastric bypass surgery. What are the
requirements for a candidate who wants this type of procedure?
Exercise Answer: The required aspects for someone to be a candidate for
gastric bypass surgery, include four primary items which must be met. These are:
- A Patient must weigh a minimum of 100 pounds over their ideal body weight,
or two times their ideal body weight. The ideal body weight is determined by standards
of height and weight (BMI).
- A history of morbid obesity of more
than three (3) years duration.
- Failure to lose weight despite
documented participation in at least one formalized weight control program.
- There must be a medical condition directly caused by, or made worse
by the extra weight, such as:
- Hypertension
- Cardiovascular
disease
- Diabetes
- Sleep apnea
- Chronic respiratory
insufficiency
- Dependant edema
- Chronic degenerative joint
disease of knees, hips, ankles or back
- (including gouty arthritis)
- Pickwickian syndrome
- Severe gastroesophageal reflux disease
- Chronic depression as a result of obesity
- Hyperlipidemia
(elevated cholesterol or triglycerids)
- Gallbladder disease
- Recurrent
incisional hernias
- Chronic phlebitis and/or chronic venous insufficiency
I
would highly recommend contacting your local physician and have him complete a
full physical to provide the exact guidelines and inform you further about the
gastric bypass procedure. The physician will hopefully provide weight loss advice
whether through direct counseling at a local center or a popular weight loss program.
Whichever course of action they recommend, we at ShapeFit wish you success with
losing the weight and we hope you become healthier and happier! << Back To Exercise Questions >>
