Exercise Questions - Which Exercises Are Best For My Lower Body?

I'm just a beginner in exercise and I was told by one of the specialists that I should do barbell squats to firm my quads, glutes and hamstrings. Are there any other exercises that I can do to firm the lower half of my body? Barbell squats are a little too intense for me.
