Bodybuilding Questions - Loose Skin After Weight
Loss
Bodybuilding Question:
Within the last week, I started going to gym on a regular basis.
I have lost 9 pounds in 6 days and my goal is to lose a total of
57 pounds. I am a bit concerned though since I do not want any loose
skin after I lose the weight. How can I avoid this?
Bodybuilding Answer:
If you're concerned about having loose skin after weight loss,
the best way to try and avoid this is through slow and steady weight
loss (1-2 pounds per week). However, even with losing weight slowly,
there is always the chance of loose skin due to the elasticity issue
with age. Older people who lose weight have a much higher chance
of having loose skin since they lose the "tightness" (elasticity)
in their skin which is the cause for this looseness after weight
loss.
Even young people who lose a lot of weight quickly can have issues
with loose skin and many times they need a surgery to remove it.
A big factor is the overall amount of weight lost. A person who
weighs 450 pounds and loses 250 pounds will have a much higher chance
of having loose skin versus a person who weighs 250 pounds and loses
50 pounds. The larger person's skin simply expanded or stretched
out much more than the smaller person and when all the weight is
lost, the extra skin doesn't "snap" back and they are
left with the excess skin.
