I have been doing cardio 3 x wk for the last 2 1/2 years. My resting HR is low 40s and I am in very good shape. I use a HR monitor and stretch and warm up/cool down and all of that. I had been walking at 4.1 mph and 10% grade for about 40 minutes. This worked very well for me but eventually, my left hip started to hurt from repetitive use. So, I am trying to reduce the incline and the time and do intervals of fast running. The problem is, I have never been much of a runner and I seem to have a very heavy step. Running at a comfortable stride for me is around 8 mph but even a couple of intervals of 1 to 2 min and my joints get sore.
Do I:
Change shoes? Slow down? Speed up? Just "train trough it"? Quit running? Change my step? Strength train my legs?
Any suggestions would be great. |

You should probably consult with a doctor and get your hip
checked out and then go from there. |

| sounds like overuse...you've gone from nothing to a lot and the hip has broken down...give a rest for a week or 2 and see how you go...you'll need to ice it daily though and try some hip mobility exercises from "get your butt into gear" by eric cressey |

Thanks for the help.
It doesn't seem like 2 and a half years is that short of a time and I would think a problem like this would have manifested itself sooner, but apparently not. Taking a rest seems to be working so that must be it. I'm doing some stretching as well. I just hate to miss my workouts. Getting back into shape in my 30's after sitting on my butt since high school is a much more involved process than I had expected.
Upwards and onwards... |
