My son is a going to be a sophomore in HS this year and is playing football, he wants to mainly increase his strength, but also lose the "baby fat" he looks at the magazines and wants to get the 6-pack thing going. He is strong as a horse but has no "real" school workout program. He has access to the standard school equip. nothing fancy and he goes 3 times a week with coach supervision. Obviously the coaches are concerned with "bull strength" not muscle building/definition. He is interested in trying some different supplements and I am willing to buy some for him, but I don't want him to be a newspaper story because he had a heart attack at 15. He will only use the supplements during weight training, not when practices actually start. I don't want him to have anything resembling a "steroid" and I don't want him with anything that gets his "heart rate up" He is interested in a "recovery product" for post workout. He saw 2:1:1 recovery in a magazine any recomendations on that product? Also if there is anything that would help during a workout, but is NOT dangerous at all for a 15 year old I would like your thoughts. He wants to get stronger and a little defined, he has no thoughts of ever getting into full-fledged "body building" but wants to get strong and "look good"

- train for function, not for looks...abs don't win football games
- a clean and adequate diet will do more than any supp can
- he wiil however need a protein shake after intense workouts for muscle recovery but that's it, at no othe times..there's a million brands so just get the cheapest one you can get for the biggest tub
- for a program search the waterbury method
- for food go to diet section and read "read before posting..."

Swanso I'd like to add something to this,

Find someone or look on you tube or in here or something to show him proper technique of these excercises.

At fifteen, ligaents and tendons and joints are still forming and growing, poor technique can cause injury, short term or lifelong.

An injury like tendenitus never goes away (trust me I know) and for me its caused by repetative motion of swimming combined with very heavy weight lifting.

I don't want to scare you but obviously your son's safety and health are your priority here.

Have him use a spotter to find his lifting capabilities and help with technique. This will help curb his eagerness which could also cause injury.

Good luck to you both!

I linked to some training vids on my site. If he or you want to by all means feel free to look.

They're are in a special section for posting memebrs, but you only need to say hi, no having to post loads of times.

Anyway it's entirely your choice, I don't push my thing on anyone, but I'm glad you're looking out for him like this. You are obviously a great parent and a good example to others Smile.

Powder Glutamine I think I spelled that right. That helps muscle recover. Drink protein shakes this should also help. When I was High school we had workout program. We always had something in our hands taking it. We lift heavy for strength. But they are right make sure the coaches have him doing things right he could get injured. I dont know how his school does things but mine we busted our butts 2 a days in the summer and weighlifting program during school hours and training after school. But they thought high school football was everything too!! Laughing Exclamation

I bought him a "protein shake" from GNC , I realize there may be better places to shop, but It got his attention. The coaches are all over him (in a good way) about technique and form. There are always at least 2 coaches in a very small weight room supervising the boys. He likes the shake and does one before and after each workout. Thanks for the help, I am guessing I will be back looking for more help once he asks me.

he's better off having a solid protein and veggie meal before training to stabilise his blood sugar levels instead of wanting to fall asleep half way through his workout

I am 16 Myself and Im about to be a junior. I also play football as well. If I were to suggest a supplement I would suggest some whey protein. I bought some for the first time a few months ago. It really speeds up recovery time and strength. It is also a very tasty protein shake. As for lifting for football he should focus on squats and deadlifts. Squats will really help a football player become stronger and It will help build speed. He should also focus on triceps and biceps. Push-ups are also key. It will help explotion power when blocking or tackling. As for the abs I would say weighed crunches and sit-ups. Also leg raises and the bycicle. He should also keep up with his conditioning such as sprints, jogging, and explotion exercises.

Well, if he wants six pack abs I recommend he follows Arnel Ricafranca's 12 week transformation workout. It gets you the six pack, and some extra muscle.

I followed that workout and I got my six pack in less than 12 weeks, and put up a nice chest and back as extras.

If he wants to build up muscle, I'd follow Arnold's routine as a basic, and then create my own workout, with things that work for me.

I'm 15 too, I got my six pack following Ricafranca's workout, and I got big arms following Pete Sisco's workout.
