I am conducting a research paper on weight training in modern society and would greatly appreciate some input from the male readers of this forum.

What I need to find out is what kind of people are involved in weight training today. In other words, who is the typical weight lifter?

Things I'd like to know are:

Your age
Your goals (do you want to gain muscle, lose weight, compete, get better for sports etc.?)
How long have you been weight training?
What is the biggest problem(s) you've had achieving your goals?

I'll go ahead and put forth my own stats -

Age: 20
Goals: Add 60lbs of muscle in next couple of years with low body fat, Vin Diesel look. Started at 135lbs 2 months ago, gained about 15lbs so far.
How long I've been training: 2 months
Biggest problem I've had: Getting my diet together, cooking enough food to last more than 1 day Razz

Age: 28
Goals: To dunk a basketball on regualr sized ring but presently getting "relaigned" so it could be 3moinths away before I am allowed to do consistent high impact stuff for lower body so mainly strength at the moment How long I've been training: properly for about 5 years
Biggest problem I've had: getting realigned has extended my time line

good luck

Age: 22
Goals: Primary aim - increase strength (sport specific for football a.k.a soccer). Also hypertrophy (6-8lbs of muscle). I want to have arms so big I would struggle in reaching to brush my teeth! Laughing
How long I've been training: 2 years properly (weight/resistance training)
Biggest problem I've had: Gaining the last 6-8 lbs of muscle mass - Largely due to the cardio demands of soccer

Masculator - your research paper sounds interesting. When I was studying, many students conducted similar work. You should (and you probably already are) get into numerous gym/health clubs and speak to members. It is also worthwhile speaking to gym staff. Anyhow good luck with it. It would also be good if you could let us all know what findings/conclusions you discovered. All the best

How long: 1 to 1 1/2 years (6-10 months just intensive cardio, 6 months cardio just to maintain results and strength training)
Biggest problem: not patient enough to wait for results and because of that over-training

Age: 16

Goals: To gain bone density and height; to increase in muscle mass and improve my overall strength and stamina.
I am aiming to reach at least 55kg and 165cm before 2008.

How long I've been training: Just over a year.

Began doing 20 push ups per set; 30 reps of 7.5kgs per set and 30 sit ups per set.
Now I do 3 sets of 50 push ups; 2 sets 20 reps of 15kgs and 2 sets of 70 sit ups.

Biggest problem I've have: Eating at the right times and training/exercising at proper rates. This is because of school demands and the bad sleeping habits from it.

Gain weigh by gaining muscle & strength. Look bigger than I ever have (which ain't too hard been same weight for 25 years..lol)

Aug 9th 2006 (9 months) PROUD OF THAT DAY. I never came close to keeping a workout routine this long.

Biggest problem is eating calories. I just can't get enough, since I'm small and never had a problem with weight I can't seem to get enough even though I eat all the time and eat good heavy calories. I also can't just eat anything. (cholestoral problem)

I'm sceptical about this. Why is this guy asking for stuff he's not been back to read in 7 months?
