Start slow. A good program is found on the cool running website. It's called Couch to 5K in 2 months. Give it a try.

Running on hard pavement is bad for your joints. Are you able to use a treadmill? Also, get some high quality shoes that will give you both stability and cushioning. Start out at a brisk walk to warm up, then run for a few minutes or as long as you can. When you become too winded, start walking again until you catch your breath. Then start running again. Keep doing this and gradually the running intervals will become longer. After a few months, you might be able to run the entire distance without walking (except for warm up and cool down).
