Age and strength
After a long period of time with just minimal strength training due to severe arthritis, the new meds have the arthritis beaten down and I've been lifting again with heavier weights. Last summer, just two days after 65th birthday I benched 305 pounds for four reps. I have since backed off and am bui...

Re: workout program, need help!
There are four basic components to fitness. The exercises are only one quarter of the equation. Here they are: Exercise Nutrition Sleep Rest/recovery First of all I agree with BossMan. You are probably doing way too much exercising. Second, you need to pay attention to nutrition. There are others in...

Re: Forearm workouts
Reverse E-Z Bar Curls, are a very good one as are Hammers too. I've tried reverse with a flat bar before, but it seems like one or both forearms, is being put under unusual pressure / stress, so I never did it again, after the initial few times. The main thing to remember with reverse E-Z Bar Curls...

Re: 16 and need help!
Well, I will agree with Boss Man, a 1,200 calorie diet is extreme and extremely difficult to remain on for extended periods of time. I would suggest you "lie" to your body. It can help you lose weight. If you to do an exercise like a brisk walk, after about 10 minutes your body gears itsel...

Re: The best time for a child to start exercising
For youngsters I like the medicine ball. It is energetic and it is fun. I think you can start as soon as they have the motor skills. Start by teaching them to "pass" a basket ball. After they are good at that (and can reliably catch the ball) move up to a light weight medicine ball. The ki...

Re: Forearm workouts
I've always worked forearms hard. Out of vanity, and the fact that in most instances people could not see your biceps, but often could see your forearms I've always trained them hard. favorite exercise is the reverse curl. But do it with an EZ Curl bar or your wrist might start hurting. This not onl...

Re: Exercises at home for weight loss?
The steps from basement to the first level have 12 steps. When I can't get to the gym to use the Stairmaster I "do the steps" for 15 minutes. When I used to live in a condo we had steps (about 20) and two sets of stairs. I would run up one set of stairs, jog to the other and trot down that...

Re: Elliptical & Treadmill
That is a lot of daily cardio. What is your purpose for that amount of exercise? Weight loss? Fitness? The main concern (aside from the amount of time involved) is your ability to fully recover between workouts. If you are not able to fully recover then eventually you will end up over-training. And ...

Re: i,ve heard about bulking up, but what does it really mean.
I always understood that bulking up meant to add a lot of muscle mass, but not to worry about adding fat at the same time. The theory being that it is easier to add muscle mass (and fat) than it is to add lean muscle. And after gaining the weight diet to remove the excess fat. This is usally done by...

Re: How to make muscular body ?
It depends on the circumstances. If you replaced some fat with the same muscle weight, because the muscle was helping to burn some of the fat, then theoretically your body composition could change without weight changing. I agree though that at a lean weight it would be more unlikely, but if the pe...

Re: eyesight and workout.....
Some people close their eyes, or even clamp their eyelid tightly when straining under weight. This can cause you to de-focus when you open your eyes. This in no way causes damage and should not be considered a point of alarm.

Re: How to make muscular body ?
How can you add muscle without gaining weight? Certainly you can if you are carrying excess weight. But if you are lean to begin with, then I don't understand how you could add mass without gaining weight.

You say that the dispute was settled. It does not sound like it was. What aspect of the "settlement" does not sit right with you?

Re: working out with a knee injury
Speed bag and heavy bag work. The speed bag will help with cardio using the upper body. The heavy bag will involve the back and some legs so really heavy hitting of the bag will stress the legs. You will have to keep that in mind when training. I think you can get thoroughly effective cardio trainin...

Re: Do More Pullups?
Negative resistance was first developed by the instructors at West Point to help cadets with pull ups. The concern was to get a large number of cadets to do pull ups when many of them could not even do a single one. So they started with "negatives". The cadet would stand on a platform that...
