I think Cassie had a good idea, I read somewhere in another post, to start posting good alternative holiday recipes for pies, cookies, cakes, etc. We shouldn't have to go through the entire holiday seasons (there are 4 coming up! halloween, thanksgiving, Christmas, New years!) denying ourselves some of our favorite yearly treats, but it would be nice to find healthier versions of those, or other recipes we could make to take with us to family dinners, so we won't be so tempted to dive into the double layer, double chocolate cake your Aunt Edna has brought to Thanksgiving dinner ever since you were two! - exaggeration...but you get my drift!! <-(does anybody even say that anymore? )

I don't eat turkey or sugar, so I always take my own food to the family get-together at Thanksgiving. I bring enough snacks and dessert to share (though no one really takes anything that isn't familiar to them), but I make sure I have enough main meals to make it through the whole 3-4 days without going out. I also take a little container to hold salad dressing if I DO have to eat out.

Once you stop eating large portions and tons of sugar, ingesting them makes you sick. Might as well avoid it, eat what you know/like, and feel great while spending time with the fam.

Sorry packsy if its offensive.... but I loved m&ms when i was a kid and i love them even more now. Another favorite... reeses!! Oh and reeses pieces too!! The peanut butter whoppers that recently came out aren't too shabby either! And lesplease speaking of pretzels... CHOCOLATE COVERED PRETZELS!! My mom makes those for Christmas every year just for me. I think i gain about 5 lbs every christmas just from those little bites of heaven!

Let me ask you a question:

If your spouse said to you that he intended to take you out for dinner just twice a year. Once on your birthday and once on Mother's day. Would you choose to go to McDonald's on your birthday and Burger King on Mother's day? Or would you insist on Ruth's Chris Steak House and your favorite seafood restaurant?

A lot of people like doughnuts, but that doesn't mean you should be doing this: http://doodaddy.net/2007/05/23/the-kris ... ding-cake/

Thats a poor example because I HATE McDonalds and Burger King. Their food makes me want to gag and i've been boycotting them since i was 16. So, no I wouldn't be very happy if he took me there. However if i had to choose between Olive Garden or the nearby all you can eat buffet... and some fancy place with over-priced 5 course meals... I would go with the Olive Garden or buffet hands down. Your example was a poor one because I LIKE m&ms (actually I love them) so I eat them. I do not like Mcdonalds or other fast food, so comparing m&ms to mcdonalds is not a fair analogy. If you were to compare m&ms to the olive garden or local buffet (man i love buffets!).... and my fiance was going to take me out to eat twice a year I would insist on what i know and what I like (olive garden and m&ms) over something that is supposed to be higher quality and is preferred others. If you like to eat fancy chocolate thats great... its a free country and you're more than welcome to eat whatever you choose... at the same time i feel that if i want to eat m&ms for my treats then again, its my choice.

Ruth's is the bane of my existence. I refuse flat out to eat there. That is by far the worst place I've ever been. Ever. I've been to three locations, on four separate occasions and holy moly. My dad loves it. He thinks I'm not his kid.

Anyway...

http://www.bernssteakhouse.com/ This place has 4 separate wine cellars, an organic farm where they grow all of the veg served in the restaurant, and a farm where they raise their own beef. It takes 4 years to become a waiter there, and you have to work in the cellars and on the farms first, so you can answer any and all questions about the menu. The wine list is bigger than my phone book. They have a separate dessert room, where you sit in a wine barrel and order dessert (:

http://www.stelmos.com/ This is hands down the best cocktail sauce on the planet. I had pet shrimp when I was eight. My sister got them for me for my birthday. I didn't eat shrimp again after that (they lived 3 days, they were feeder shrimp). Then she took me to St Elmos when I was visiting once. (One of three times I cheated in 10 years of being a vegetarian.) Best. Cocktail Sauce. Ever.

Cassie - Idk about reeses pieces, but I will slaughter the cups.

Never heard of any of these places. I need to visit the east coast one of these days.

Reeses pieces: Again this goes to show my point. Different strokes for different folks. The thing about peanut butter m&ms is that you get more peanut butter in every candy than you do with the reeses pieces... so the m&ms are better. But reeses pieces aren't too shabby either. And the cups... oh man I do love those. I'm a bit fan of peanut butter and chocolate.
