Halloween costumes from the past....

Postby fitoverforty » Fri Oct 30, 2009 5:12 pm

Hey guys, what was the best costume you ever wore as a kid on Halloween? When I was a kid we just made up stuff....never was such a thing as a store bought costume. I was a indian princess once when I was 10 - had my long hair braided and wore a headband with a feather stuck in it - a long skirt and my moccasin houseshoes! I thought I looked great! Didn't have a fancy candy bucket - just an old pillow case worked good, we would draw ghosts and write "BOO" & scary things on it. Pillow cases could hold alot more candy than some dinky bucket! :D I remember I would catagorize my candy into piles of 1. favorites 2. not so favorite and lastly 3. those little orange and black wrapped candies - yuck!
So what was yours?

Gosh I'm totally drawing a blank on cool costumes from the past. One year I was a ghost, one year a clown, one year my dad (the high school varsity football coach for the local high school) had us dress up in football uniforms... gear and all.. and be football players... one year I was a rag doll... one year a baby... Pretty boring really.

On this subject... What is the deal with women using halloween as an opportunity to dress up on the sluttiest costumes they can find? Halloween is supposed to be scary not skanky!

Man I go all out for halloween. I make my costumes every year (the monster made me do huge sewing projects every summer to keep me out of trouble... now I make everything because things in the store have inferior stitching...). Mostly I like to make dresses that look like things. One year I had a green dress with a huge yellow patch on the belly. With a giant tail and a hood with big scary teeth. There were spikes down the back, too. I was a dinosaur (: And one year I found this really rad raw silk in robin's egg blue, the almost exactly color of a tiffany box (!!!), So I made a dress with that with a big white bow, and a white satin stripe across the ribs, and one going down the center of the dress (: Last year I made a dress that was white on the front half, and a blondie tan on the back half. I had some short, stout little ears on a headband, too. I had a perfect little cotton tail, and I painted my nose pink. I was Wiggles. This year I am going to be T Pain. I have been letting Wiggles play w the giant T Pain hat. I think it would be neat to be T Pain and be able to pull a rabbit out of my hat.

And I have no idea about the slut thing. I just like to be pretty. I think that is why I do the dresses every year...

Well, the costume that sticks out in my mind was the year I was a 50's roller girl. I got a sweater, scarf, rolled up jeans and of course roller skates! When I was young my parents did not take me to a Halloween costume store to buy costumes. When we were little we got a costume in a box with a plastic mask from K-Mart then when older we rummaged around in our closets for stuff. Those were the days! We took our kids to get costumes the other nite and just the masks were like $30!!! Then there are out -fits and accesories! I told my husband no more of this next year! Our kids will be ages 12-16 and they can come up with their own stuff like we did from now on!!! Cassie, I am soooo with you on the slutty factor. Some of the costumes I did not want my kids to even look at the picture on the bags! There were also 6 inch red glitter "Dorothy" platform shoes and sky high boots. Halloween used to be so fun and innocent. Maybe I am just getting old! :(

One year I wore a "50's" flared out poodle skirt with a pair of white oxford shoes, sweater, scarf and my hair in a ponytail with a big ribbon tied in it. It was so much fun.
I agree with ya Sandi, Halloween costumes these days are absolutely ridiculous! $25 for a child's costume! I refuse to do it anymore. I, too, miss the days when Halloween was just fun an innocent...just a great chance to dress up using the stuff from your Mom's closet (or your dad's!) or whatever you could devise, going out and scoring some great candy! :D When I was young we still went out in groups door to door (no parents following in the car) and we only had one rule....we could only go to houses where we knew people. I remember we (neighborhood friends) could come up with some pretty weak reasons to know someone...like "I know them! I saw them once standing out in their driveway!" LOL! great times....great memories :D
HAPPY HALLOWEEN EVERYONE!
Just so ya know...if any trick or treaters come by my house tonight, I've got some of those little snack size Peanut M&M's :D

My favorite was She-Ra. I was also once a bride...I bet all the fathers were scared!

We're in a new house, so I had no idea how many kids to expect. I bought a ton of Reese's (it's one of the only candies that doesn't have hydrogenated oils or corn syrup)...and we only had 3 kids!! I hope my husband is hungry.

I remember a kid once, who got told trick, by the householder, presumably calling his bluff.

The kind subsequantly sprayed her hedge with spray string, then inserted a toliet roll or two for good measure.

She looked a little miffed, but part of me thinks, she still went outside, the next morning and snaffled the toilet rolls and used them.

After all, I would call that more of a treat for the householder than a trick, when some kid leaves them free toilet roll

Mannnnn these kids aren't even trying. I just had two show up at my door wearing Florida Gator t shirts (The UF UGA game is in Jville every year and was held this afternoon. UF won 41 17. Oh hell yes.) I feel kinda cheated when I'm dressed up more than the kids at the door! At least my t shirt looks like mummy wrappings.. sheesh.

Though to be totally fair I had two kids, probably like 8, ring the doorbell and trick or treat, and get some candy, then their little sister came up behind them. She was probably 3 or 4. totally adorable. She just stood there looking at me. "What do you say?" "Thank you." "No, sweetie, before that" "Please?" So I whispered Trick or treat! and she said it with gusto, pouring her tiny little Princess costumed heart into it! Adorable!

Another big group I opened the door and screamed really loud. Two off them actually dropped their buckets (:

LOL! My dogs have been barking their HEADS off at the passing trick or treaters (dogs are in the yard next do the front door) so haven't had any actually knock on my door. I live in a town of 1500 so highly doubt I'll have very many, if any, actually show up and knock. Just in case I just sent fiance down to the store for candy. If anybody does show up to my house they are going to hit the JACKPOT as I'm giving out ALL the candy tonight. Had decided that I wasn't going to give out candy, however I'm going to feel like a giant jerk if somebody knocks and I have to turn them away. I should put some oatmeal in baggies and hand that out so i'm not contributing to childhood obesity. Boy wouldn't I be popular!

I'll be right there......let's see..Texas to Oregon, should take me about 3 days :? jk! I certainly don't need any candy in my house...especially chocolate...i wouldn't trust myself!! It's gonna be hard enough trying not to sneak a piece or two out of my son's bag! Trust me....he has already counted and would notice any missing!

My dad called me to tell me he was upset with the monster and me for getting tootsie pops (we made ghosts out of them w tissue). He said there wasn't anything he could pick through. He's been on the "program" for about six years. We wonder why it doesn't work...

I was a witch for 3 years, a black wizard, then little red riding hood, as for this year… I was an angel. I usually put my clothes together to make my own costume as the ones in stores have that skinny & slutty kind of outfit!

Few years back... I was trying on a costume at this big Halloween outlet (Spirit) My goodness… I was stuck in an outfit… one of my girlfriends had to come in the fitting room to pull me out of it… (mind you it was the largest size too)… Sigh… sad!

As for this year, I was going to go out (Castro was a big thing in San Francisco but not anymore… as its regulated now) So all I did was baby sitting my dad, who recently just got out of the ER & my 1 year old my niece who was a little ladybug…SO CUTE!

We gave out candies… My goodness, at my new house... A lot of kids come all at once!
It was a group of 10-15 of them every 15mins... Good thing, I bought 2 bags of candies (105 pieces per bag) & I got some mini toys, glow in the dark sticks, bracelets & necklaces…etc…)
At the end of the night, I was left with 1/4 of a bag (the boys at work out kill it in 5mins once I take it out) :P
