How's This Routine For Burning Fat?

Postby nullqwerty » Wed Oct 28, 2009 2:40 pm

Hey folks,

I'm a 30 year old male. 5' 10.5", 170 lbs. I'm in decent shape, work out regularly, and eat very healthily (high protein, low carbs, low calorie, low fat, low sodium, little processed foods, lots of water, daily vegetables...).

I'm trying a new routine to combine weight lifting and cardio in one, as my time to workout is very limited.

3 Sets of Bench Press...In Between each set, sit ups on inflatable ball
3 Sets of Arm Curls...In Between each set, ab side dips with weight
Hop on the treadmill. 12 minutes. 1.5 minutes at 4 mph, 1.5 minutes at 8.5 mph, alternating back and forth the whole time. Extra 2 min to cool down.
Finish with 3 sets of Tricep Pull Downs.

Gives me some toning that I want, with Cardio, and hopefully fat loss. Is this a good routine though?

What do you think?

Replace arm curls with chin ups, then you hit your back, too. Get some leg work too. Keep it balanced (:

Do Cardio at the end, not in the middle.

If you'r going to add Legs, (you should really), forget Treadmill, and go for something like exercise Bike.

Treadmill will cause quite a lot of impact on already tired, worked Legs, which will be required to loadbear all your upper body weight. On an E B regular or recumbent, most if not all the weight would be channelled away, creating less potential fatigue and aiding muscle recovery.

Thanks for the responses!

Question on replacing the treadmill with the bike. Will I get the same cardio benefits and calorie burned benefits as running provides? I think so...just checking...

Cardio is cardio is cardio. Work hard, watch the heart rate and you're fine. The calorie counters on machines are kind of like drawing numbers out of a hat. Don't set any store by them.

Try putting an Exercise bike on level 20 Interval, and see how you do. 99% intuition says you'll be lucky to get one revolution.

Then you'll see how good E B's are. For most people 20-30 minutes Interval on something like level 4-6, is more than good enough to sustain a quality workout.

I wondered the same thing about the bike thinking since I was sitting I wouldn’t get as good of results as I would with a treadmill. I don’t know about the regular bike but I have been using the spinning bike at the gym for the past month and it has really been wow on toning. I can feel it really working my abs and legs and I can work up more of a sweat on it than anything else. I worked out on Elliptical and treadmill the 2 months previous, losing weight, but not toning a lot. Now after adding the bike (I still switch cardio machines day to day)..my pants are really loose and I would definitely recommend the bike for toning.
