Coud be indicative of one or more things, not being suffcient in your diet.

See a Doctor about it. I would think it's potentially related to Copper and or Iron intake, as they affect things like Blood quality, in relation to Red Blood Cell amounts.

Iron plays a significant part, and one of Coppers functions, is to help Iron regarding storage and utilisation.

It can also be caused by not getting enough water, I believe.

Good shout. Missed that one. That could be indiciative of some kind of dietry failings, as pretty much all foods contain Water. He might therefore just need to have a more increased diet, and that might be enough, drinking pure water not included in that possibility.

However Mossie, as you've already got a diet thing going on in another section, it would be best to keep that disucssion there, not do it here as well :).

i should add as well as lack of water, dietry failings and perhaps the need for more shut eye, it could be hereditary. i have had dark rings for ever and nothing will cause them to go away completely, some things may make them less noticeable but the only thing that is 100% proof is a good concealer.

One of the ways to get rid of them is lying down, closing your eyes and placing used tea bags on them for 15 mins daily.I am not sure about how they work,,but one of the reasons might be the rich content of antioxidants in the tea..hopefully it works for you as it worked on me..

i had dark circles last year and it was really bad... i have a fair skin and dark circles made me look aged and tired...
apart from dark circles i also had developed melasma which is a dark patchy discoloration of the skin below my eyes, on the nose and chin... i was feeling awful... :(
i visited a skin specialist and he prescribed an ointment called ultrasone HT. This really worked for me! i was asked to just apply very little (as much as a size of lenthil) and just lightly massage over the dark patches and leave overnight. Gradually the dark patches and the dark circles vanished. I feel so good when people compliment me saying i have glowing skin and beautiful eyes.
But I prefer you visit a skin specialist to have an exam of your dark circles and he would prescribe something that works for you. Many products over the counter are available but you will have to do the trial and error until something works for you... and that means a lot of time and money and you would get frustrated... so seek for medical attention and hope you get a solution to this problem just like i did.
Apart from that good sleep, not being stressed and relaxing your eyes are very important. I also tried a lot of home made remedies but what really works is when you are nousrished from under the skin and not just on the skin. A good instant soltuion would be ofcourse make up be it if you are a guy or a girl, you get fabulous products to conceal your dark circles. I have learnt to use them with ease now and I personally use Absolute concealer from Oriflame or Maybelline dream matte mousee (shade 4) and it works wonders.
Hope this informaton helps. Good luck! :D

Seems like treating the symptom, not the problem...

Agreed.

If this happened again, go to the Doctor, take his ointment or prescribed product, and then ask what preventative measures can be used, to stop the problem happening again.

If he tried to dodge the subject or didn't know, possibly consider a new one. He might even want to keep prescribing stuff for problems, instead of giving people advice on prevention, to help boost pharmaceutical company profits, especially if they're nice enough to send him some free stationary and free Eye Ointment samples, to encourage him to act more compliently with their wishes
