Also be careful not to overtrain...when I was doing my weights and karate and other stuff, I got to the point after a month or two that my body just refused to work. I was running on the treadmill and my legs simply quit working. It took me a good week of recovery (total rest) to get back to health.

Not saying you can't do all that...just remember to take it easy and get plenty of nutrition! :D

I love Martial arts. right now I feel like I have to lose weight to do jujitsu and karate better, much like your "get fit to run, not run to get fit" saying. I dropped the HIIT sprints because I do kickboxing 2X a week and now I am doing jujitsu 1X a week. Karate is not all that cardio because I am a beginner. It is no harder than walking the dog right now. I am sure that will change in a month or so, and when it does I will adjust, maybe even drop something.

So right now it is heavy cardio 3X a week (I think a lot like HIIT becasue of it's intensity and rest periods, either, jujitsu, 5 minute rounds with a 2 minute rest, or,kickboxing, 2 minute intense exercise with a 30 second rest) and weight 3X a week. I also hike with the dog nearly daily a 2.7 mile hilly loop at a 3.5 MPH pace. (Just for kicks I clocked and measured it with my husband's GPS).

I will be watchful of overtraining. My Sempai was worried about that too. Told me to take yesterday off but I forgot to tell my friend to not come by because we do weights together. So since she was there, well, you know.

I am off to walk the dog.

I love martial arts too… Back in my college year… and 45 pounds lighter…I did Taekwondo, Hipkido, and Judo. It’s A LOT of boot camp workouts!!!!! Lots of kicking, punching, drills… (Memories) I was going for my black belt in taekwondo but my master told me I’m doing too much (over training)… I was also running every morning… with weights… which was a bad idea… My ankle was actually hurting because of that!!
I was in the gym 5 hours a day because I was training to compete!!!

So... I limited myself from the others and focus mainly on Taekwondo. Besides… I had to mentally and physically prepare myself to compete in sparing!

Martial arts is totally a good way of being active and burning those calories with the drills. But you also need to rest and make sure you’re not as sore… It is VERY IMPORTANT to stretch after a workout… because you’ve been kicking… stretch out your legs… you’ve been punching… stretch your arms, back, etc…

Some masters will give you time to stretch in-between drills or after a workout… but make some time for yourself to stretch on your own… it always helped me be more flexible and less sore! The next day I come in doing spin hook kick! :P

I wish I can go back doing that… unfortunately the doctor told me NOT to spar and be careful with my lower back… Stupid Drunk Driver!!!!

But Turbo kicking boxing is good at the moment! :D

Good Luck and great to know you are enjoying Martial Arts!

Nokie I am sorry to hear you had issues and couldn't continue properly with what you are doing.

I am 100% in favour of any type of boxing or martial arts for women. So I would actively encourage it, for those who can.

Whatever you can still do Nokie, you should be proud of it, and proud of what you tried to do :).

Thanks Boss, Yeah… Sucks that the drunk driver was driving a stolen car and ran off after he rear ended my NEW car… and consider totaled!!!

Only regrets that it was 2 months before my black belt test. My Master wouldn’t let me test because of my injures. The test required major sparing and if they would have took that part out for my test… then it wouldn’t be fair to the other black belt test. Which I can understand… but hey, I can’t go back and try to change things… I’m already fortunate that I’m alive after that accident. Now I’m slowly but surely being active again and this time… eating healthy with it! :D

Hey Patty, if you continue long enough with martial arts… the fun part is breaking the woods!!!! :P

Hi Patty!

I've moved my journaling to the contest thread in Weight Loss/Fat Loss so haven't posted here in awhile.

Just checking in to see how you are doing. Hope all is well!

I am still around and checking in. I am down to 181. I have lost 58 pounds total. I got my first belt ranking in karate and will be testing for my orange belt in two weeks. I might have my first tournament in October in Conn. Everything is going great and I have all of you guys to thank. I will try to check in with everyone has we get rainy days, because otherwise I am outside.

It would be great to meet up. I am not sure where it is yet. I know it is around the 17th or 18th of October though. When it gets closer to the date, we will set something up.

OUS! I had my first belt test yesturday, I am now an orange belt. I did 17 knuckle push-ups and then finished on my hands. But all 30 were on my toes. So many, especially women, were on their knees. Lucky they didn't tell me that that was an option. I don't think I would have worked so hard. LOL When I got to the dojo 2 months ago, I could only do 5 push-ups on my hands and only because I had started weight training two months before that (I could only do 10 on my knees then). I have come so far. I did all 30 sit-ups with a short break for air at number 25 and did them way under a minute. When I first got there, it took my 2 minutes to do 30 with a lot of breaks and my stomach hurt for days after.

I borrowed sparring gear from that woman whose wrist was broke (she is so nice), and Shihan (the teacher) let me spar, even though I had never sparred before, because of the lack of equipment. Sam said that Shihan wasn't going to let me spar because of the no experience, but not only did he let me, I got to fight Senpai (another teacher) in her 2nd stripe test, a 20 man kumate. A kumate is when you fight one person at a time for 60 seconds, with no breaks. You bow in, you fight, you bow out, NEXT. I was the only girl picked to fight her and I got her 4th, while she was still relatively fresh. I was on the offensive most of the time. I figured if I gave her time to think I would get my butt kicked so I just started fighting. Really hard to remember not to kick to the knees or hit to the head after you get hit hard. I didn't hit her there but had to pull a couple of punches.

I did pretty well although I am battered and bruised this morning. Mostly my shin and forearm. I scored really high on everything with all kinds of praises from my judge. Like he said I am taking the right classes and that I surprised him in sparring. He said with more training, I'll be a monster.

So funny that I expected low numbers in kicks and a few other things because I could see all my problems. Like when kicking in place, I have a hard time pivoting, but moving I have no problem.

Have a great week everyone!!
