Thanks for the link, Les. I have even better news. :D :D I should maybe say something about my last doctor visit in October. My regular doctor had not seen me since April. The doctor who took me off meds was filling in the week I saw her. When my regular doctor finally saw me he completely freaked. First off my hemoglobin A1c was without meds 4.5. Not only was it normal it was exceptional. The doctor throughout my physical kept saying "I am shocked". At one point he said, "I am sorry I keep repeating myself, but I am shocked". He then told me he never seen what I did happen before. He said he had seen a handful of young people in their 30s lose the weight and lower their blood sugar, but he had never seen someone my age do it. He said I no longer have diabetes. I now will only have to see him once a year for regular check ups. He even said I had an athletic heart. lol   My heart rate was 56. My blood pressure was 110/60. It looks like I may be around this forum for a few weeks after all.

Good luck on your first 10K!! Have fun!

Thanks!

Other news, besides running my first 10K tomorrow. Next Wednesday I start a Half-marathon training course with my running club.

Update: Looks like I will not be running my first 10K tomorrow after all. I just got an email from the promoters of the event and because of the bad weather forecast tomorrow they are asking for those who plan to run the 10K slower than a 12/min mile pace to please run the 5k event instead. Because of my heel injury I am not confident I can the run 10K at a faster pace then 12/mile. Without the injury I am sure I could do it. This is a big disappointment, but I will take it in stride.

Edgar, this is such an amazing accomplishment. You have healed your body of an illness. I am so happy and proud of you! You are certainly a rolemodel for the young as well as the older folks who think it is too late for them to change their health. It just takes commitment, dedication and a will to stick to it and MAKE IT HAPPEN.

HR at 56 / BP 110/60!!! That IS the heart of an athlete!

Wow, Edgar, I just caught up on your journal and I have to say, you neve cease to amaze me :D YOU ARE DOING AWESOME!!!!! Both on the running and the weight loss. And what a great feeling that must be to see your health improve so drastically :D I am so happy for you! Sorry to hear about the race tomorrow - the weather is pretty nasty here so I a assuming it is similar in Chicago. Good luck with the 5K, I'll be thinking about you tomorrow (and I have to say thinking of you running will help to keep me from overeating on Thanksgiving  ). GOOD LUCK!!!

Its going to be the 5K. I am afraid to chance hurting the heel long term. I am not going to try for a PR in the 5K. I really can't run very fast without pain. Its not that I can't take the pain. I can take it. But, why risk my long term goals? I really want to get the first 10K under my belt. I've trained for it and I run longer distances in training. There will be other 10K races. Actually the doctor news is a month old, I didn't make a big deal out of it at the time. Some of the praise I have been getting locally here in Chicago has been Embarassing. Its been kind and my ego likes it, but I should have been treating my body like this all my life.

In all seriousness I think your contributions to this forum are a present.

I'd like to say a little bit about today's race. This may sound a bit negative at first, but in the end it was a positive. After I received the email last evening about because of weather concerns they were requiring a 12 min mile pace for the 10k I really felt bad. To be honest I was afraid of that 10k. And when I got that email that 10k became a schoolyard bully and I was backing down. I could not sleep all night. I felt like a coward. I have committed myself to running the Chicago marathon next October and that has me scared too. If I let a 10K bully me what is the marathon going to do to me? This morning before I left home I made decision to go ahead and run the 10K. If I had to run a 12 min pace that is what I was going to do. My heel is hurting bad, it is the back of my heel really. I think its the Achilles tendon. But, an injury could happen any time. The only way to avoid it is not to run at all. When I got the the race they said they the weather looked to be holding up so they would allow a 15 minute pace, but if it started to rain during the race the cut off would still be 12 min. So I ran the 10K. The first 4 miles I kept the 12 minute pace in case it started to rain. After that I knew the weather would hold so I let myself slow down the rest of the way. The pain was pretty bad but I made it. My unofficial time, going by my Garmin was 1 hr 17 min 40 sec. In the past the official times have tended to be slightly slower. The official race results should be posted by tomorrow. Note: I think the course had to be designed by M C Escher. How else could the course be a 10K loop that went uphill the whole way. I am limping around like a zombie now, I know I am going to go through some pain tonight when I try to sleep. I feel good about myself now.

Heel has improved today. Yes, if is still inhibiting my running by next Thursday I will be calling my doctor. I am not trying to be a hardhead, but trying to avoid a medical bill. Even though I am insured I still have to pay 10% of medical expenses which means x-rays and an MRI could take a nice chuck from my savings.

I started reading my journal from the beginning today. WOW!! I forgot how far I have come. Another thing I noticed and forgive me if I forget someone.

I know exactly how you feel - the support on here means EVERYTHING :D I have "met" some truly amazing people here and I can't say thank you enough :D

Way to go on the 10K! That would be intimidating knowing that you might get cut off but you went for it anyway instead of opting for the 5K - that took a lot of courage :D Congrats! And I agree with the others, get that heel looked at! I know it is expensive but you don't want to do permanent damage that could cost you your running...

Rest day today. I did a slow paced 8 mile run yesterday. My heel is definitely improving. I put on a pound in yesterday's weigh in. I expected that from eating like a pig on Thanksgiving. It doesn't mean I like. Funny, what only one bad meal can do.

I will do a 4 mile run tomorrow. Wednesday I begin half Marathon training with the group. I will probably sign up for a half marathon later this week.

Nice! You will have no problem training for a half marathon - you're over half way there now!
What kind of program is it? Is it a 12 week, 16 week? When is the half marathon you are signing up for? I am planning on running one possibly in February, and definately in April (although the April one might be a full marathon...if I get brave enough to go for it!)
Glad your heel is doing better. I totally understand your frustration at having an injury, and I also understand why you still run on it...it is a runner's thing....we are the world's worst at letting injuries heal....because the thought of not running is worse than dealing with the pain...we know it makes no sense...it is just the way we are...can't explain it, it is what it is...having said that - i have learned over the years and dealing with various injuries, that it is best to treat the injury and cross train until it is healed, even tho' it feels like you are "losing" all your hard work and fitness, you aren't. Hope it continues to get better - but if you have to stay off the running paths for a while to let it heal, remember the elliptical can be your friend :D and keep you aerobically fit until you can hit the road again.
Good luck with your journey Edgar...you are amazing!

The half-marathon program is 12 weeks. I will be signing up for the Illinois half-marathon being run April 30. I already have 3 halves penciled in for next year. On top of that 2 ten milers. Those runs should help me get ready for the big one in October.

I ran 4 miles this morning. I wanted to run it at a fast pace put I just could not summon up the will. The heavy wind and the layers of clothes did not halp.

Go Edgar! That is awesome. How long will your Friday run be? You should have 20+ miles this week! You are inspiring me to get my mileage back up in the 20 + miles per week again. Keep it up! I have a feeling those 1/2 marathons and 10 milers next year are gonna be a walk in the park for you. And the "big one" in October is well within your grasp.
