It occurred to me this morning when I let my dog out in these fridgid temps - I am going to have a hard time motivating myself to keep running outside in Wisconsin in the middle of winter  I was all gung ho about planning to sign up for a bunch of races to keep me running outside all winter, but now that the cold temps have officially arrived, I am thinking I was a little crazy to think that. And this morning was NOTHING compared to what it will be in another month or two

  Well I hadn't thought of it that way - although that means I will need to be seen in running tights as well

I guess I am going to have to get out and get some good warm running attire. I am such a wimp when it comes to cold  And I am going to need an awful lot of motivation to get me out there. What I need to do is just sign up for the Thanksgiving 10K to keep my mind focused so I get out and run!!!! Tonight will be my first attempt at cold running, so I will have to let you know how it goes.

Well, my plans for running any races in the near future have been demolished  I went for my first trail horse ride today and ended up spending the last six hours in the emergency room  I am too tired to describe what happened, but to make a long story short, I now have a fractured rib, an extremely bruised hip/thigh/tush, and a fractured thumb and forefinger  I am in excruciating pain and can't move without assistance. It just never seems to end with me, I am beginning to think maybe I should wrap myself in a bubble  I am not sure if I will be able to go to Florida now because I am not sure I will be able to sit in a vehicle for that long :( I sure hope everybody else's weekend went better than mine!!

sorry Jocelyn!! I know from first hand experience that you can really get hurt on a horse too!! i think that is another reason why i like to take care of them and not ride them. i fell giving a trail ride when i was volunteering once and my tailbone has never been the same. Hope you feel better. take care! Florida is alittle ways away still isn't it? So see what happens.

i feel a little bad because when you told me you were horse back riding, i totally thought about telling you to be careful. I was suprised that you were doing it because i know you are afraid of biking and rollerblading. horse back riding is not easy. i fell when my horse saw a homeless guy in the park with a cart and got scared out in AZ. it hurt like hell!! and it was embarrassing too because it happened in front of a trail ride. I'm lucky i didn't get more seriously injured. I landed totally on my back. head looking up at the sky.

i love horses but it definitely takes time to get good at riding. and i think it helps if you are a kid when you learn. I never did get good at the riding part althought i tried.

How long did the doctor say it will take for you to heal about??

If I were you Jocelyn, I wouldn't totally rule out Florida :). You have some time left before you are planning to go, so you can look positively at this and try to feel optimistic about the recouperative powers of your body.

I totally empathise with you about how you must be feeling and although I've never been through something like that personally, these things can work as a great teacher and help you to understand what sort of added stength you have, that you did't realise existed within you.

Adversity comes with its own heartaches, pain and emotional difficulties, but it can also teach people things and be a kind of life affirming thing, that helps rediefine people in some way.

So don't look at this as some kind of cruel fate, or something that can control how you feel emotionally, but moreso something you can learn from and if you're sensible and keep believing in how the outcome may progress from here on in, you can try to stay strong and keep your diet and mindset more positive.

If you can do any sort of walking, or even something like exercise bike work, to keep the exercise going in some way, then think about it, because it will help to keep you focused and ready for the day when you can get back into more serious exercise again.

This is a chance for you to see how brave, strong and capable you are of overcoming adversity. You can either prevent this from ruling your life, or let it take over, but you might hurt worse in the future, knowing you allowed this difficult situation to claim some of your exercise focus and ruin your dietry habits, than if you stay strong, keep focused, keep smiling through the pain sometimes and know it's only tempoary and you're not in a state where you need intense physio for months, or possibly may lose some function forever, so it could have been much worse.

I know you can get through this strongly, because I have never stopped believing in you. You're a wondeful person who doesn't deserve this, but I know you can overcome this and do it well and with much strength and pride.

I'm very proud of you for continuing to put yourself first and trying to be consistent with your goals and I'm sending you a BIG HUG and letting you know, that if it all gets a bit much, or you're having one of those days, drop me a message and we'll work things through :).

As always, I will be here for you :).

GOOD LUCK and best wishes Jocelyn and don't forget how much you're worth, because you're worth so much to this world and you make people like me happy and richer. You're a fantastic part of the community and a really beautiful person and we will always stand by you okay :).

I am thinking of you I hope you recover as quickly as is humanly possible.

Oh, I'm not giving up! I was just in a really drug induced state when I typed that (had just gotten home from ER) I am in more pain than I care to admit and haven't been back to work yet, but I fully intend to keep eating healthy and exercising what little I can! I am just super bummed about not being able to run :( I have a follow up appt next Monday morning and I will know more then about whether I should make the 24 hour drive to Florida or not. If I can't at least I will save some vacation days

I am staying at my sister's house since I am not really able to dress myself completely  I have been working from home and intend to go back tomorrow, at least for a partial day. I am not sure how it will feel to sit upright for an entire day, and it may take me a half an hour just to use the restroom (every time I have to go  ) so I will just see how it goes. If it is too much I will just leave and work from home again.

My diet hasn't been terrible the last couple of days, but I am so sick from my pain meds that sometimes I just need something that tastes good instead of something healthy. My sister is trying hard, but I don't want her to have to completely change her meal plans for me (although she is giving her best effort). I plan on stopping my pain meds tomorrow (not gonna be fun!) but I get so sick from them I know I won't be able to work or drive while taking them. I guess it is just a waiting game now to see how everything heals up - I am making progress, I can move a little more than a shuffle now, I can actually pick my feet up and move them forward a couple of inches now

Maybe you might be better if you ditch the pain meds using something like a Ketoprofen or Ibuprofen gel product.

Thid way you don't have anything that might taste horrible, or cause mild or unwanted side effects during gut transit.

Obviously there are things like freeze sprays, heat sprays or heat patches that can be used too, but I think an NSAID based gel product, might be a more managable modality compared to pain meds :).

Boss Man, I am actually severely allergic to all NSAIDS (including acetometophin), otherwise I would opt for that. I only took two today (I am supposed to take 2 every 4 hours but I can't stand the way they make me feel, so right now I am just dealing with the pain). I don't plan on taking any tomorrow because I have to drive to work. So basically my options are to feel drugged up on oxycodone or suffer through the pain

Good luck today at work! It sucks that it happened, but you seem to have a pretty positive outlook about all this which i'm sure will help with your recovery too! :D

Work went better than expected, and I am walking MUCH better than I was yesterday :D Although I am exhausted now, it takes a lot of work to stay sitting upright for that long. My back is really sore from using different muscles to hold myself up, but overall I think I am starting to heal pretty well. And yes, I think having a positive attitude is going to help me heal faster :D There's nothing I can do to change it so there's no point in wallowing in self-pity and anger. My hip is really swollen and it is turning a really crazy shade of red. You can literally see the exact spot that I landed  But I think a lot of the internal swelling in hip area must have gone down because the joint is working much better, which is why I am walking better! If I heal as much tomorrow as I did today I am going to be back to normal in no time :D
