What Bossman said is correct. Hanging won't do much of anything and there is no muscular contraction. Wide-Grip Pull-Downs or Wide-Grip Pull-Ups are a great way to get lats flaring outward. If your goal is to simply just get a V-shape, be sure to mix things up a bit and do other lat exercises in your routine, don't just focus on wide-grip items.
