How do I do more pushups?

Postby Axidias » Thu Oct 29, 2009 7:12 am

I have never been able to do many pushups maybe 20 at the most and I want to be able to do 100 effortlessly but how do I go about it. I did 10 a day but that didnt do anything, yesterday I started trying 3 sets of 10 but will that get me anywhere either? Can I do that daily? If that wont work how exactly do I get to the point I want to be at?

On a good day I can knock off 90 or so. When I was in college I once did 163 consecutive pushups.

Other than for personal achievement there is little reason to do this many.

But here is the method I used:

You want to do 100 consecutive pushups. Each workout should include 150 total reps.

1. Set #1 is warm up and do about 10 reps.
2. Set # 2 (wait about 3 or 4 minutes between sets) do as many as possible.
3. Do additional sets (max reps each time) until you accumulate 150 total pushups

I get my 150 reps done in 3 sets.

1st set is 20 reps
2nd set is (about) 90 reps
3rd set is (about) 30 reps

I take an extra two minutes after the big set.

The total reps are 150.

Repeat the workout 2 x per week.

(I do this also for decline push ups. My feet on a step ladder about 30" off the floor.)

150. I think after 40 I would be doing 1 rep sets. Can I do a bunch in the morning and evening to equal 150?

Reset your immediate goal to 30 reps.

Do your first set to warm up.

Then do your maximum set.

Then add sets until you get to 45 reps. (Goal + 50%)

Something like this:

10 reps
20 reps
10 reps
5 reps

Total = 45 reps.

Keep your warm up set the same all the time.

Keep increasing your maximum set as you are able.

Finish the 45 reps in as few sets as possible.

Repeat 2 x per week.

Once you are able to do the 30 reps, reset your goal to a higher number and go through the process again. Always figure 50% more reps total than the goal. Always keep the warm up the same. Always increase the maximum set as you are able. Always try to finish off the total in as few sets as possible.
