First day and I need all the help I can get

Postby NorthFire » Mon Aug 23, 2010 4:17 pm

New here and new to dieting for the first time.

My first day tracking what I eat and how many calories. Wow was I surprised.

grams calories %total
Total 807
Protein 34 136 17%
Carbs 148 592 74%
Fiber 12 0 0%
Sugar 26 104 13%
Fat 8 72 9%
Sat 2 18 2%
Poly 1 9 1%
Mono 2 18 2

As stated this is the first time I actually decide to track what I eat, fist time dieting actually. I am 37 now and sitting at roughly 225 lbs. I gained most of my weight (about 90 lbs) in the last 5 yrs after taking on a desk job with a high stress level. I'm also one of those who stopped eating breakfast and lunch back in highschool. So as you can see, eating more is going to be a challenge.

I need all the help I can get. About 1 month ago was due day for me, I stopped eating junk, drinking pop and am trying really hard to get healthier. On a typical day I would eat a decent dinner, chicken, rice and probably have a snack around 9pm... Now I am trying really hard to eat more, breakfast even if it's only 1 fruit, lunch usually a few pieces of mixed veggies, dinner and if I need a snack then I'll grab another fruit or mixed veggies. I know I should eat even more but I actually feel sluggish if I do. I have also started walking as much as I can. I am so unfit and unhealthy it scares me. I don't think I could last doing cardio at this point.

Any suggestions to get me back into better shape physically and mentally?

Yeah you need to start with breakfast. Ideally you have 5-6 small meals daily which are each composed of one serving of lean protein and one serving of complex carbohydrates. This plan will support weight loss by boosting your metabolism and regulating your energy levels, which will also make you feel a lot better mentally. What does a day of eating look like for you, typically?

Brentyboy Thank you! I need all the kicks in the A%% I can get.

Athene my typical, before I started eating more would consist of coffee about 3 cups throughout the day, no food. I would eat at diner time, we eat lots of chicken with either french fries or mashed potatoes, maybe a pasta plate or something similar. I hardly every have a second plate. Probably once a week I'd have popcorn and a soda while watching a movie. Now I force myself to eat. I am still not up to the calorie count I should be but I am trying.

I'm sorry for missing this when you posted it two weeks ago - I always check the forums I post in but I guess you slipped past my radar!

At my gym we would call fasting during the day and eating one big meal at night the "sumo wrestler" diet ;) It' good that you're trying harder to eat. My husband was guilty of it for many years before he started caring about his health.... he wouldn't eat anything during the day, then eat a pizza around 10PM and go to bed. Your metabolism is so slow at that point that everything you eat in the evening that isn't used right away is stored, because your body doesn't know when it's going to get calories again.Try to get yourself into at least a breakfast-lunch-and-dinner type of routine, and then your body will respond and you will find that every 3 hours or so you actually need to eat. The good part is you will lose weight once this happens, if you are eating nutritious food. Some people think the less often you eat the less body fat you will carry around, when actually the opposite is true. The more frequently you eat small portions, the better.

How is the eating going so far? Anything new that you like?
