Resistance Band training for weight loss

Postby NewFitJames » Wed Jan 18, 2012 11:17 am

Hi,

Like many other people I am trying to get into a fitness regime for the new year. Just got married, and am hitting that age where the physical affects of being out of shape become more and more apparent. I have been doing research on multiple programs for weight loss as well as the tools to I would need. I am leaning towards resistance bands because how compact, portable and versatile they are (I travel a lot for work so portability is key). After doing several reviews I am thinking about resistance bands from this company:

Particularly one of these 3 sets

http://prosourcebands.com/categories/re ... d-set.html
http://prosourcebands.com/categories/re ... -of-3.html

Do any of you have experience with these ProSource Bands? If so what are your opinions on them? Which of these sets, or combination there of, do you think would be the best? Thanks in advance for all your help! Looking forward a fruitful experience with this community

I don't have experience with that brand, but I have used resistance bands as I travel a lot for work too. In general, I have found that resistance bands can pretty much duplicate any exercise of dumbbells or cable machines. Where I have found difficulty is lower body exercises such as squats, deadlifts, and calf raises. The issue is that you need tension when the band has the most slack, which is the bent position for lower body workouts. The challenge is making sure you have enough tension to effectively work out the legs, but not so much that you can't hold on to the bands with your hands and have them secured underneath your feet. This is not a show stopper, just don't plan to be squatting a couple hundred pounds with them. I personally prefer the bands from bodylastics. They have a lifetime warranty, several different anchors you can get, snap resistant technology, more tension levels, handles, ankle straps, and carrying bags. They also have a free workout video site with something like 6 different workout shows that are free. They are a little pricier than others, but worth it. Just my opinion.

As far as the workouts go, I would start with full body 3 times a week, then progress to something like a push/pull routine. I have found the bands to be more effective in a higher rep range, such as 10-15 reps.

Hi James,

I LIKE these bands, but DON'T like this particular seller. If you can find these bands from a different seller, I think you would be well-served by these bands. I had originally thought I would order the Bodylastics MMA set of resistance bands (http://www.bodylastics.com/mma/), but when I found they were temporarily out-of-stock, I Google'd and found these ProSource bands from the seller you listed. Since I needed the bands for an immediate trip out-of-town, I ordered the bands with expedited shipping.

Long (tragic) story, short... seller promised delivery by 2nd-day air, and then couldn't/didn't deliver on-time. I had to refuse delivery and fight the company for a full refund (which was awarded by PayPal). I ended up ordering the MMA set from Bodylastics when they came back in stock.

So... keep in mind that, unlike Bodylastics, the seller mentioned here is NOT the manufacturer, only an online retailer, and you should be able to find these bands from another seller.

Keep up the good work, and best of luck in your workout/weight-loss success!
