SHoulder pain after Shoulder Workout

Post by kadao »

Hi,

I having a pretty bad pain in left shoulder, arm and fingers after the workout. I started with weights after a long time. Had taken up running for few month.
I did few shoulder exercises with 15lB dumbbells.
The pain starts from shoulder all the way down to fingers, specifically middle finger. Initially I thought it was just a sore muscle but it been 2 days and the pain is same as day1.
Is it normal?

Thanks,
Dhawal

No it's not in opinion.

If you just had a sore feeling in the muscles you worked, then that would just be DOMS, (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness), which comes on around 24 hours post-workout and last for 1-2 days usually and it's perfectly normal.

However you appear to have a shooting pain of some kind, which means you may have possibly trapped or impinged a nerve, or possibly caused a situation where there is some kind of pushing against a nerve, that might cause some kind of deviation.

I would suggest seeing a doctor or even a specialist and they may decide to do an NCV, (Nerve Conduction Velocity), test, where an electronic device is attached to the affected area with two little pads and one part of the device encourages a nervous signal for the other pad area to pick up, so as to ascertain the speed of the nervous transmission.

This might be something that is done, but whatever happens, I'd seek a proffessional consultation, because you shouldn't have pain like this after a workout.

I agree with Boss Man. It isn't normal...especially the tingling in the fingers. That does sound like an indication of nerve impingement.
Chiming in that you should get it looked at. I wouldn't recommend exercise until then.

Something is definitely causing you referred pain along the radial nerve. It could be in your shoulder such as rotator cuff tendinitis or a labral tear or even possibly be coming from your neck. Do you feel any neck tightness or pain? I would also recommend seeing a Doctor. In the mean time try icing 2-3 times a day and if you can take Advil or Aleve and rest the shoulder. If it still hurts likely physical therapy or a cortisone injection will be all you need.

It is very common, for those who do repetitive shoulder motions. If you want relief from this pain then try these exercises.
1.Front raise shoulder exercise.
2.Side raise shoulder exercise.
3.Back raise shoulder exercise.
