Heart rate question

Postby cuchulain » Tue Dec 07, 2010 2:08 pm

When I have finished lifting I do some elliptical. The machine says for my weight/age my heart rate for burning fat should be around 140. To maintain anywhere near 140 I am barely moving. How accurate are the minitors and should I follow them. If I do any type of HIIT the machine tells me to slow down. I admit to being out of shape but should I follow the machines advise, (sounds stupid) or do what my body can do.

Absolutely agree. Best bet get yourself a Polar monitor that straps around your chest, they are the most accurate.

You can't really judge your heart rate with a monitor when performing HIIT. They're mostly configured for LIT cardio. The HIIT won't burn as many calories during the span of your elliptical session, but more calories are burned later on in the day. The machine doesn't tell you that.

It is not accurate. I guess there should be a specialist that would monitor your heart rate while doing cardio for you to have accurate findings.

I would go with what johnroberts actually said , makes more sense to go to a specialist to monitor your heart rate and yes most of them are configured in such a way that you wouldn't have any idea about the calories which you have lost apart from the time you actually spend on the HIIT .

cuch, glad someone posted this! the machine can be WAY OFF! I'm a nursing student and a paramedic I do ekg's etc. Some machines i've been on huffing and puffing it's read my pulse at 60bpm when i did the manual it's 170! Unless you have a heart condition focus more on breaking a sweat than what the machine says, remember the machine creators dont wanna be sued. You're probably around 40 years old? also do interval training. hit me up if you have any questions.
