walking on an incline

Postby musculArgirl2 » Thu Sep 01, 2011 9:35 am

I'm trying to run walk 3 times a week, and would like to start walking on an incline on my treadmill as well. Any advantages or disadvantage i should know about? I can tell already it gets my hr higher than swimming. It seems like a pretty good way to get cardio for someone like me who is overweight.

You will burn more calories walking at an incline than walking with no incline.

just be careful to stretch thoroughly to avoid shin splints and overuse.
I would alternate between incline and regular levels to help distribute the work on the leg muscles.

I think that's a good idea to alternate between incline and not. thanks Lynne.

I need to stretch more. I actually have never been much of a person that stretches. Even when i use to run a lot. I definitely need too though. Check the article out later today. :D

Some treadmills have a setting the automatically alters the incline, over set time periods, which would be beneficial.

That would be beneficial. My treadmill doesn't do that but possibly the gym treadmills might. I will check it out. Thanks. :)

I always walk on an incline. It burns more calories, as tones the rear end in the process! Make sure to walk on a straight path for the first 5 mins or so to prevent any shin splints, jumping right into the incline can cause these.
