Postby chopper123 » Tue Sep 29, 2009 8:00 am

been told by a member of the gym to keep my heart rate at 135 for my age (35 ) while doing cardio
is that about right or is it better to get it higher than that ?
i normaly do 20 mins on the bike

There is a range you can use for your HR. Going too high is a bit dicey, and going too low doesn't do much. It varies with age, fitness and from person to person, so find what you're comfortable with.

Age Zone Max
20 years 100–170 beats per minute 200 beats per minute
25 years 98–166 beats per minute 195 beats per minute
30 years 95–162 beats per minute 190 beats per minute
35 years 93–157 beats per minute 185 beats per minute
40 years 90–153 beats per minute 180 beats per minute
45 years 88–149 beats per minute 175 beats per minute
50 years 85–145 beats per minute 170 beats per minute
55 years 83–140 beats per minute 165 beats per minute
60 years 80–136 beats per minute 160 beats per minute
65 years 78–132 beats per minute 155 beats per minute
70 years 75–128 beats per minute 150 beats per minute

There is a methodology for calculating stuff like this.

Target Heart Rate is 220-age.

Then you have the differing levels.

General exercise, THR x 50% - 60%.

Weight loss, THR x 60% - 70%

Endurance work, THR x 70% - 80%

Weightlifting, THR x 80% - 90%

Hardcore stuff, THRx 90%+

In reality though particularly the first two, they may not be as relevant or beneficial as doing stuff that stimulates a higher range Heart rate.

Obviously this is for people who like to calculate thier own HR's. The above chart Les posted, also serves a very useful guide to go by, however these things are never set in stone, such is the uniqueness of one person to the bext.

Optimal heartrate can also be measured, rather than by number, but by level of function. If you are running so fast you struggle for breath and CANNOT talk, you should probably ease back a bit. I keep mine at a steady enough pace so I can breath easily adn uniformly, and speak. Not carry on long winded conversation, mind you, but enough so I'm not struggling to do anything. Usually around 170 or so. My "optimal" is 158, so I do run higher than the scale.

my god...

no that is the most retareded thing i've heard..was that an actual trainer?

if you wanna burn fat then train as HARD as you can irrespective of heart rate (obviously you're clear of any heart situations??) and eat properly

Honestly I agree with swanso and lesplease, give'er and if you can say "hi, how are you?" to someone without gasping for breath but not wanting to keep talking for the next 5-10 minutes then you should be good. If you are trying to slow yourself up just to hit a heartrate, don't! Go with how you feel more than the number.

cheers
