Salad question??

Postby wolfen147 » Sat Nov 07, 2009 4:30 pm

Ok, so I know that anything is "good" in moderation, and overeating is a very bad thing. But if I happen to get hungry again (such as today, I took my SAT's and couldn't eat a whole meal for 6 hours!) I just had a banana and some nature valley granola bars. But I was wondering if it was even possible to eat too much salad? Forgive me if I sound like a moron, but I just was wonderin, you know me :3

Thanks in advance!

You are not going to eat too many vegetables. Ever.

Now, if you mean taco salad. Then the answer is HELL NO THAT IS THE MOST AMAZING FOOD EVER. But things like, macaroni "salad" aren't really salad. Just watch the dressing (: And croutons.

Not likely.

Yes Vitamin A in Tomatos causes Vitaminosis at high levels, like all Fat soluables can, but realistically, most fruits / veggies, commnly used in such a meal, are low Carb, so if it was just those, with nothing else like Nuts in it for example, you'd probably have to eat about 3kg's of such mixed foods, before you consumed enough calories to create an excess that would convert to Fat.

What you're describing often can be the downfall of many. too low calories for weight loss, unless you eat something with it like Chicken for example, or a sizeable portion of Nuts or Legumes, as some salads can look pretty filling, and struggle to go much over 100 calories, with just typical components, containing little to no Protein or Fat.

I'm just asking because sometimes I end up getting hungry about 30mins-1hr after I eat a meal, and I want something to satisfy my belly without eating too much of what I shouldn't, and I don't think I get enough vegetables daily anyway.

1) You're right. You don't get enough vegetables daily. I was a vegetarian for 10 years (vegan for 2 of those) and I sincerely doubt I got enough vegetables daily. No one does (:

2) If you are hungry after a meal, a salad is a great option. Toss some protein w it. ff/lf cc, sunflower seeds, couple berries and spinach is my fav (: Protein will help fill you up and keep you satisfied. Veggies do contain fiber (again, no one gets enough), which will help fill you up, but protein will help even more. So will fat, but I'd opt for the protein!

I disagree about "no one" getting enough veggies. I'm positive I get enough. In fact, my grocery bill is ridiculous and its insane how many veggies i go through in a week. I'm pretty sure I get enough fiber too. :) However, I would agree that *most* people don't get enough veggies.

Wolf, another thing you could try is legumes. I make a "soup" where I mix lentils, cooked cauliflower and brocolli, mushrooms, onions, salsa... and any other veggies your heart desires. Its pretty darn good and VERY high in fiber and low in calories. Its also amazingly filling... and nice in the winter months when the weather is cold and you're wanting something hot and steamy to eat.

Legumes are very beneficial. Full of Amino Acids, Carbs, Iron, Magnesium. In the case of Soy, Monounsaturates, Calcium, Fat soluable Vitamins and Lignans / Phtyo-oestrogens. To name just some things.

Also a lot of Beans contain Catchin Anti-oxidents, the things found in Wine Beer and Chocolate. So you get the anti-oxident benefits, without consuming stuff that is a risk to health.

In the case of Baked Beans you also get Lycopene in the sauce.

Legumes are pretty much win-win.

P.S. Peas have more Iron than Broccoli. I'm not slagging off Broccoli, I'm just saying

Yes that's true. Heam is about 15-20% absorbed, Non-heam is 5-10%.

Still Legumes are a pretty win-win foodstuff.
