how safe/effective are supplements for slimming down?

Post by afrist34 »

I'm a new user so thank you to everyone in advance for your help.

I've been trying for quite awhile to slim down, doing lots of cardio and some weight training. I did a lot of research on nutrition as well and pre/post workout meals, as well as things to help metabolism, for example morning vs. evening workouts, etc.

Nothing I do seems to get me past the first initial loss of inches (I lost a few inches but no pounds at all so I attribute that to weight training). I'm working quite hard and doing what I should - eating right, taking the day off to let the muscles repair - and I'm stuck.

Only thing I can think of is possibly needing some supplements to help with fat burning, etc. Does anyone have advice about what's safe and effective?

Hi Afrist, good to talk to you.

You don't need supplements at this point. Supplements don't work as a replacement for "doing things right", they just permit a small bolstering effect to the primary effects that doing things right provide, providing the supplement(s) used are actually decent and not a load of old cack.

What times do you eat at and what foods do you eat at those times?

Hopefully this isn't too much info:

breakfast is around 8 - either cereal and banana, or fruit/Gr yogurt smoothie, or toast and banana, or eggs
Mid morning snack 11ish - nuts or cottage cheese or Gr yogurt
lunch at 2 - something with chicken or tuna, usually salad or pasta
Mid aft snack - same thing as other snack
Dinner around 7 - hard to regulate with family, but chicken as often as possible, sometimes beef, usually vegetable included
Crackers or dry cereal mid evening, glass of milk before bed
8-10 glasses of water throughout day

I'd stick with the cereal and eggs, or have the toast banana and eggs and alternate the breakfasts or stick with one of those, as you'll get a good mix of protein, carbs and fats.

Why not have some nuts and a small amount of low fat cheese.

Lunch is fine.

Keep the snack the same.

Dinner obviously is a it tricky, so that has to be the same as usual.

It sounds like you are doing everything right and the weight loss will come. However, the best workout supplements I have used are Beachbody's supplements. Their supplements are tailored to specific needs in the gym to help you get through your workout. They also have post workout supplements to make sure your body gets the nutrition it requires after. Give it a try and I hope it helps you out as much as it helped me!

Sorry, I don't mean to negate Bossman, but I really disagree with his assessment of your existing diet. Based on the fact that you are trying to slim down, you are taking in way to many carbs and fat throughout the day.

Here is what you posted:
breakfast is around 8 - either cereal and banana, or fruit/Gr yogurt smoothie, or toast and banana, or eggs
Mid morning snack 11ish - nuts or cottage cheese or Gr yogurt
lunch at 2 - something with chicken or tuna, usually salad or pasta

As a Certified Fitness Nutrition Specialist and husband (who is an RD who developed Custom Nutrition Software that creates meal plans based on the individual), I can tell you right off the bat that your breakfast is way too high in carbs and sugar. There is absolutely no protein in these options (and no - yogurt is not considered a protein since the primary macro nutrient is fat and sugar in 90% of the yogurts on the market). Again, throughout the day you are carb and fat loading with the exception of the chicken or tuna. Seriously high carbs - no doubt you can't drop at all. When you understand the right amount of carbs for you as an individual it is much easier to write up a meal plan - specifically one that would help you reach your goal. I would be happy to assist you further if interested.

They are quite effective actually. If you want to lose weight you can always do it with some sort of supplements, but don't overdo it. I've always preferred a natural way of dealing with weight loss. But using protein, bcaa and maybe l-carnitine is always good for your weight loss.

No worries Uman, you're entitled to pass an opinion on this, so I'm totally okay with that :).
