Can protein drinks cause liver failure?

Postby arely26 » Wed Sep 30, 2009 12:33 am

So I have just heard that there is a great number of people in the hospital due to liver damage caused by energy drinks and protein drinks. I can believe that about energy drinks, but protein drinks? I asked why protein drinks and I was told that the amount in a drink is way too much for the liver to process in such a small period of time and that I would have to drink a lot of water to dilute it. So has anyone heard about this? Maybe drinking a lot of them would be the extreme that causes liver failure. Any ideas/facts?

I'm a little worried because I just began to drink one protein drink after my workout and don't want to do unnecessary damage to my liver.

Hyponatremia can put you in a coma, cause seizures and brain damage. It is when your body doesn't have enough sodium, because you drink... Too much water.

Yes, anything is possible.

No, it's not easy.

A protein shake after your w/o is fine.

A bag of protein shake after your w/o is slightly excessive.

A big part of the liver/kidney damage is from having protein protein protein and little carb/fat. This is what makes Atkins a bad idea.

Don't worry. You'll have to work pretty hard to damage yourself with a protein shake.

The main issue with energy drinks are if they contain Caffeine, because for people with Caffeine sensitivity, or prone to geting things like Heartburn and Ulcers from Caffeine, or those with a mild Gout issue, or heart problems, then Caffeine should be contraindicated for those peoples benefit.

However most energy drinks are perhaps acceptable for marathon style training, but for people just doing weights, or using a treadmill for 30 minutes, Water is perfectly fine.

Energy drinks are for most, a waste of time, almost certainly providing little benefit, (though probably some benefit, if though not very tangible), and the manufacturers of the fancier types, just wap in 2-3 Amino Acids, and boast about it on the Can, as if most people are going to know what the darn things do anyway.

Something that contained 2-3 Aminos, some Caffeine and load of fast acting Sugar, like Dextrose, would probably have a Liver impact, that wasn't a concern, unless the person ha a pre-exisiting or undiagnosed Liver complaint.

Let it be known that Medical School does not require a single Nutrition class to become a doctor.

Nursing requires *1* (though Microbiology and Pathophysiology do involve some work with Krebs).

Doctors, strange as it is, are not qualified to answer questions regarding Nutrition and Dietetics. RDs are. LDs are. The title "Nutritionist" actually means nothing. Technically, I am a "Nutritionist" but I have another 18 months for my RD.

Just a thought (:

Nutritionist does mean nothing, especially in Britain, where anyone can call themselves that and there is little regulation.

Basically it's probably like calling yourself a Posturalist, and claiming you can give people advice, on how to have a healthy sitting, standing and lying position, in any given situation .

Some of the protein suppliments have "secret" ingredients, and some of these can be harmful.

Some have unlisted steriods; some diet pills have unlisted diuretics. So it is possible for these to have adverse effects on your body.
