When I started working out, I barely changed my diet at all. I took N.0. Xplode as a pre workout and already had a protein-heavy diet. I was about 225 lb. when I started work (had recently recovered from surgery), 2 months later I was about 220 lb. with a lot less fat and a lot more muscle bulk. Your metabolism increases with the more muscle it has to support, so I lifted heavier weight with 5-8 reps per set and that seemed to build muscle faster than my usual 10-12 rep sets.
