sciatic nerve

Postby PandorasVise » Sat Apr 25, 2009 9:34 am

I went and tried kickboxing the other night, I awoke to a horrible pain in my hip shooting down my leg only when I move in certain positions. I can walk, hike, lay down, but sitting and getting up, is very painful. I cannot even tie my shoes. I looked at webmd, and it basically said I had to be patient and as long as the pain is not from a slipped disk it should be better in 2 to 12 weeks!

There has to be something I can do. I am icing the area and trying to walk as much as possible. nsaid's are doing nothing for the pain. Is there anything I can do beside wait? My next kickboxing class is tuesday, and i totally loved it.

Help me please find a way to kick box tuesday!!

The title to your post is Sciatic Nerve - isn't the kind of pain you are describing a result of a disk pinching your sciatic nerve?

Don't take any chances Patty - I've had that pain and it's no fun. Pushing yourself now could make for long term recovery. Sounds like it's nothing to fool around with....:(

One way to see if it was a Nerve issue would be to get an NCV, (Nerve Conduction Velocity), test, where two measuring sensors are applied to the area, and an Elecrical impulse in the nerve is triggered, then the other sensor measures the rate of the impluse.

That would possibly see if there is a nerve problem for sure.

Although it sounds like it might be anyway.

Most NSAIDS don't really attenuate pain, they mask it, and if it's a Nervous pain, it might be harder to mask it with NSAIDS as opposed to say pain from a Muscle, or connective tissue.

You'd probably need something more stronger than NSAIDS, like a prescription product, or something else that would be more powerful, and target the issue better.

You can RICE the area, but if you cannot shift the problem, then a Doctor might be the best option, if you haven't already.

Lu thanks for the concern about the slipped disk. I know it is not a slipped disk, it would hurt with pressure and walking if it slipped. I think because I did the kickboxing real hard for an hour when I am not used to it, made everything swell up and pinched the nerve. I am sure it is a weight complication. Once I get to a normal weight, things like this will happen less often.

Good news I can tie my shoe today. I think the ice is helping. Doing it once and hour for 15 minutes and trying to stretch. Found a video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tz2CAHJGZkQ yesterday I couldn't do it, this morning I can.

This video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VMbpM7riZI&NR=1 on the other hand was so funny. I couldn't do these stretches before sciatica!!
