how do i prepare for a 5K run

i dont normally run but am in good condition. i go to the gym 3-5 times a week and weight train i also do cardio then but its speed walking or spinning.

so whats a good way to start training? how many times a week should i do cardio?

i would like to place in the top 5 of my class. i got the stats from last years race.

the race is may 17

some one PLEASE help

First of all you need to start running. I did a 5K in 2006 it was a lot of fun but still if your not prepared for it it's exhausting.

I would say get to the gym at least 5 days a week to run personally I think you will do better performance wise if you run outside. Treadmills soften the blow to your legs which makes it easier. Your going to be running outside not on a treadmill so I say get outdoors and get your legs used to the pavement trust me it's a lot harder.

If you can't run a mile do the stop start method that is what I did I would run as long as I could then walk 30 seconds it works.

There's also the couch to 5K program that is really helpful to a lot of people. I suggest typing it in and following that program.
