running while 70 pounds overweight good or bad idea?

Postby musculargirl » Fri Jan 29, 2010 6:08 am

That's my question.. I've never had hardly any running pain and I don't want to start now so should i lay off on the running till I'm at a thinner weight?? Unfortunately, I don't have a lot to choose from. I have running, walking and my step video and every once in a while cross country skiing. I do want to increase the times i go cross country skiing.

I'm just run walking right now so its not like i'm running for 30 min straight but still.

I just bought some running shoes so I'm good there. That's one thing I don't skimp on is running shoes. Maybe, I will try to increase my cross country skiing a couple times a week if i can manage it, so I'm not running as much.

One thing I always do is add an orthotic insole to my running shoes - as soon as I get them. Sometimes I have to take out the insole that comes in them, and sometimes I can just fit the orthotic one in on the bottom and add the running shoes' one on top - it just depends on how much room you have.

This adds extra support and cushion, and I have learned over the years that is just pays to go ahead and put them in right away. You can find them Walmart, Target, or you can order custom made ones online or from your podiatrist. The picture looks like a pair I have used with alot of success
I think the run/walk program you are doing is good, and I know it must be hard for you to hold back, since you have been a runner in the past and have run a marathon - but just be patient - as the weight comes off and you build up strength and endurance you can run more and walk less.
Remember, you don't run to get fit, you get fit to run. (Very hard for a runner to accept! - trust me, I know! lol) Losing weight first with controlled, careful but purposeful exercise will allow you to get back to where you want to be, so you can enjoy running, or whatever you like, without the worries of unnecessary injuries.

This made me smile a little. The truth is that my marathon days are far behind me right now, so I sometimes really don't having any problem with walking! :) For osme reason I'm more tempted to go for longer distances run/walking than increase my running in a shorter time. I'm more an endurance runner than a speedster. I never really pushed myself running speedily but i would push myself with the miles i ran per day. At one point I use to run 12 miles a day. So I over did it a little. :)

Hey, run/walking or fast walking is great! :D Every body has different strengths. It's funny...but I have NEVER been a good long distance runner, it is alot of work for me - I have always loved the short fast races, and love doing speed drills, sprints, intervals, etc. Just remember, that with whatever you choose to do whether is is run/walk, or fast walking, or long distance running, every workout needs to be a challenge - push yourself to improve on a weekly basis, be consistent, step out of the comfort zone. Those pesky pounds will be gone in no time! :D

Thanks for the advice about insoles Lynn. I forgot to mention that too when I ccmmented here last. I've used insoles before but not recently. But I think i will get some when I get to a Walmart. :)

i found this link.

Which made me feel much better. I'm going to try and incorporate some run/walking again in to my routine only once or twice a week though. :)

I'm currently doing the walk fast/jog method. For 10 rounds, I do 2 minutes and 45 seconds of fast paced walk, followed by 15 seconds of jogging. I repeat this for 10 rounds(30 minutes)--I do this for 3 days, rest, 2 more day, rest, start new week--I saw bossman had suggested this method to someone else and decided to try it myself. Every new week I add 5-10 seconds to jogging, and delete that same amount from the fast paced walking time (slowly building up to running 30 minutes without walking). I'm on my second week (I'm only adding/deleting 5 seconds to each week) and like you...am about 70 pounds over weight. It has been working great for me (except for the fact my left leg goes numb/falls asleep around the 20-25 minute mark), and has been by far the easiest way to increase my running. It hurts (soreness) and I hate it while I'm doing it, but I push through and get a sort of high when I'm done. :P

I have double posted, but not yesterday, I'm 99.9% sure of that, so somehow your post has caused a replication of mine too.

I'll inform the Admin and he wil make tech aware of things.
