Am I considered light or medium active?

Post by Weasel »

First let me say that I have very bad knees (thanks army) which restricts me quite a bit. I do fast walks 5 days a week (4.5mph for an hour +/- 10 min) and three days a week do weights for 25-45 minutes depending on knees. For the rest of the day I am mostly sitting; so for me I seem to be stuck between light active and medium and am really unsure which one to choose for profile. I fall into medium for 5 days of exercise but light for little movement around the house during the day. Advice?

**I walk because riding hurts even more and while so does walking, I would rather have pain then be over weight**

Cheers

You're a medium. It will be based on whether you actually do any exercise and how frequently, not really how much you move for the full amount of waking time per week.

I too feel as if I am stuck between light and medium, most weeks I like to hit that medium mark but some weeks with school and work it becomes more of a light week. But for you I would say you are a medium, most days you are getting out there at a good pace. I also wanted to applaud you for fighting through the pain for your healths sake. Thank you for taking on that pain for your service in the army :)

Just noticed this, Thanks!

Yeah, the knee is a real bummer and now right is going too :( but I am not going to let them stop me; I just can't sit on the couch and become a lump, I refuse too.

Thanks once again.

mom too has a serious knee problem, she consulted the doc and he said not to push the knee too much or else it wont last long.

so I hope you have consulted a doctor before doing your exercise because knee injury stick around with you long and get very serious if not consulted. :)

Oh yeah, both doc. and I are in agreement that to do nothing would only make it worse, allowing it to stiffen and not be able to take the ever day wear and tear. I am of the belief that the worse thing you can do to an injury is baby it; I was walking on leg the day after surgery with no pain meds (doctor thought I was nuts). Give 'em hell!

Right now I am trying to get off the meds and force body to accept the way things are; I don't want to be dependent on narcotics for the rest of life, I would rather cut leg off then suck on pills forever.

I would suggest swimming. It has very low impact on your joints and keeps you very fit.

Can't swim worth a lick, but you are right, it is a total body workout. Plus we have no pool (public) anywhere near me that I know of, but thanks for the suggestion.

**further to first post**

I saw a specialist yesterday (Dec 8th) and he also said that not using the knee is the worst thing you can do for it as it makes it weak and degrade faster. Maybe your mother should get a second opinion?
