Excited about a new lifestyle

Postby yveskleinsky » Mon Jan 09, 2012 8:51 pm

Well long story short, I have always had an interest in health, wellness and nutrition. After some family health scares about two years ago, I decided to become a nurse (a field that I have always been "pulled" to, but never imagined that I'd go back to college). My first day of nursing school we were asked, "What is health?" and I was surprised that we couldn't all agree on some semblance of an answer. The farther I got in nursing school the more disappointed I became as it was becoming all too clear that the American health care system isn't about health care at all, but about disease management. The more patients I worked with whose bodies were ravaged by complications from obesity (such as diabetes--and resulting amputations, heart disease, poor mobility, low O2, depression, high blood pressure, etc.) the more I became interested in prevention and the emotional/psychological reasons behind obesity. After a lot of research I decided to become a health coach in addition to an RN, and am excited to start the health coach program next week. (I plan on being more of a nurse educator once I'm done.)

This journey toward helping others has really shined a light on ways that I can improve in my own life, as I want to practice what I preach. In the past, my weight has osculated from being 15 pounds underweight to 25 pounds overweight. Currently I am 5'2 and about 137--and would like to get down to about 125ish. I go to the gym about 4-5 times a week and work with a personal trainer. Before I began working out with a trainer I thought I knew how to work out, however I couldn't have been more wrong. Throughout this journey I have been on with learning how to take care of others, I am learning a ton about how to take care of myself. Before, I was never into going to the gym, but now it's a "get to" instead of a "got to". My thinking has shifted from "I want to fit into this new dress" to "I want to fit into this new lifestyle". I have a vision now of the person I want to be and make strides to bring her into focus every moment of every day. I am very motivated by the support, advice, experience and stories of those that are here on this forum, and am excited for where I will be health wise in about 3-6 months.

I am very excited to have found this community, and will be posting pictures of my progress monthly. :)

It's a great community and it i think a lot of that is due to our moderator Boss. He's knowledgable and kind hearted which makes it a supportive forum. Look forward to hearing about your monthly progress. The health coach career or becoming a nurse educator sounds nice! Nice to have you here. :)

First of all, welcome! Glad to have you here. This really is an excellent community of folks who share their ideas, tips, struggles, and journeys of their weight loss.

I've never thought of it that way, and you are right.
I am so glad you are someone who has been moved to try to understand the reasons behind the obesity problems facing so many people, and are trying to make a difference. I wish you all the best in your training to be a health coach. :D

I like that positive attitude!! Good luck in everything, hope to read more of your journey along the way.
