No, but if you're concerned switch to Whole-grain from white, providing you have no issues with things like Wheat or Gluten, or any other grains.

Bread in moderation is okay and quite nutritious. It would only be a big issue if you grilled it with a shed load of high fat Cheese on it, but otherwise, moderating it is fine, but obviously don't eat it 3 or more times a day perhaps, as it is high GI and could ramp your Blood sugar up quite highly on a regular basis each day, which could, long term, invoke type II Diabetes.

I'm in a different camp :)

Here's a great article about why grains aren't the best thing for people to eat - aside from the fact that eating it in excess (which it takes very little bread to do) leads to insulin responses, weight gain, and less stable blood sugar.

What the person failed to mention, is that grains contain Beta Glucan, that can help lower your Cholesterol and apart from something called Lentinen Mushrooms, I have never heard of anything else that contains it except for supplements.

You can lower Cholesterol with Fatty Acids and plant Stanols however.

Barley also contains Flavanoid content which are anti-oxidents, which is also beneficial.

Also the author doesn't tell people what this intestinal mucous is, he just compares it to some sort of mucous prevelant in IBD sufferers, but that doesn't mean it is, so he is vilifying a human secretion that might be beneficial to people.

I cannot say, as I don't know what this muscous actually is.

Also the Author doesn't elude to the fact, Lectins have shown medical promise in relation to Cancers and are not entirely bad.

Lectin Website

The argument is however compelling and certainly for people with IBD, IBS or bloating, grains are best avoided, but in my case I'll consider them not much of an issue and continue to eat them :) .

You don't need Beta Glucan.

There may be good things about whole grains, but there are very few things in grains that you cannot get elsewhere (at a lower caloric cost). The things you cannot get elsewhere are not essential.

There are all kinds of negative effects of grains (even if you don't have acute symptoms).

I try my best to avoid it when I can. I'll always take half the bread off my sandwiches and order any hamburgers I get protein style (wrapped in lettuce).
