Muscle Building Questions - Weight Lifting
& Growth Stunting In Teenagers
Question: Me and a friend are going to start training together, I'm 14
and he's 15. I have some weights at home but I've heard rumors about growth stunting
and stuff like that. What is the least amount of weight I should lift? We do want
to do weights but not really heavy weights.
Answer: Weight lifting will not "stunt" the growth of teenagers,
that is a myth. However, extremely heavy lifting is unnecessary and might be detrimental
in preadolescent teens, which is why the emphasis in young children should be
on "activity" and "exercise" and not just lifting heavy weights.
Competent supervision is important and an emphasis should be placed on proper
form and good lifting technique So you develop good habits.
