Kathryn’s Weight Loss Interview!

How much did you lose?
I lost 102 pounds and went from a size 24 to a size 6!

When did you become unhappy with your weight?
I reached a point where I couldn’t keep up with my active one year old. I would be out of breath and sweating with the smallest amount of movement.

What made you decide to lose weight?
My mother passed away from cancer in 2006. She was not diagnosed as quickly as she should have been, in part, because she was extremely overweight. I decided I didn’t want my life shortened because of my weight.

What were the most important changes you made to lose weight?
I was literally eating fast food meals three times a day. Changing my diet was the most important change. I swapped my fast food breakfast for a bowl of cereal and lost 30 pounds by just doing that.

What was the most challenging thing you had to deal with during your weight loss journey?
The most challenging thing was to keep going. Sometimes I would hit a plateau and it would be hard to keep pushing myself to continue. If you think that once you hit your “ideal” weight then the journey is over, you will most likely gain the weight back. This is a lifelong change.

How long did it take you to start to see results?
I began to see results in about a month and my clothes didn’t feel as tight.

How long did it take for you to reach your current weight?
It took two years to achieve my results. I became pregnant again in the middle of my weight loss journey.

How long have you maintained your weight loss and what are the most important factors for keeping it off?
I have maintained my weight loss for over four years now. I keep active and that is the biggest factor for keeping the weight off. If I have a bad food day, I don’t beat myself up. No one is perfect.

What keeps you motivated to continue your weight loss success?
I look at my children and I know the importance of taking care of myself and setting a good example for them.

How has your life changed now that you have lost weight?
I feel more confident than ever before! I love how I look and I love that I can be an inspiration to others.

Do you have any advice for others who are trying to lose weight?
Love yourself enough to get healthy. Too often, we make excuses for why we can’t workout and say things like “I don’t have time” or “It takes me away from my kids” or “I will start tomorrow“. You have to be a little selfish in taking the time to workout and get healthy. In the long run, isn’t that more beneficial for your kids to see a good example of what healthy is? I work full-time, commute, have two young kids and I’m currently pursuing my MBA. If I can find time, anyone can!

How did ShapeFit help you reach your weight loss goals?

Kathryn’s Weight Loss Tips!

Weight Loss Tip #1:
Pace yourself. Think of your weight loss journey as a marathon, not a sprint.

Weight Loss Tip #2:
kathryn-weight-loss-story-5Get moving. Even walking can add up.

Weight Loss Tip #3:
Making small changes in the food you eat can cause big results. Swapping one regular soda for a glass of water is just one example.

Weight Loss Tip #4:
Pair up with a partner. My husband was a huge supporter of my weight loss journey and keeps me on track.

Weight Loss Tip #5:
Log your food. I track everything I eat, every day, no matter what. You have to face the music if you have a bad day. When I first began tracking my food, I discovered I was sometimes eating 3,000 to 4,000 calories in one day! I never realized how much I was eating until I began logging my food.

I love running, but I mix it up with the elliptical machine or the bike at least twice a week.

  1. Awesome Kathryn! But could you please specify what your workout routine and diet was in the initial days of your journey? It will help people like me who are beginners on a weight loss program.

    • Hi Tinu – When I first began, my exercise just consisted of walking. I made it a goal to walk five miles every day. I added the elliptical about two months later and the first couple of times I was only doing 5-10 minutes, as that’s all I could do. As for diet, the first change was breakfast. I swapped fast food breakfasts for Special K cereal with almond milk. After a couple of months I added changes to lunch and dinner, but calorie tracking was key. Try using a tracking app for your calories. I use Loseit. Good luck!

  2. Wow, I love your story! I feel a kinship because I am just a few years older, same height, same goal weight, same hair color 🙂 I love how you are motivated to be a good example for your kids. I don’t have any, but it comes down to health in the end for me (though looking great is a HUGE perk). Also, I was glad to read that your husband was so supportive 🙂
