Vitamins - Learn about all the different types of Vitamins!
The
term vitamin is derived from the words vital and amine. There
are 13 official vitamins, and several "unofficial" vitamins
that will someday be added to the official list. Vitamins work together
with enzymes in chemical reactions that release energy from digested
food and regulate billions of chemical activities that occur in
the body every minute.
Water-soluble vitamins (B vitamins and vitamin C) are not stored
so they must be taken into the body every day. Fat-soluble vitamins
(Vitamins A, D, E, and K) can be stored in the body's fatty tissue
and in the liver; hence the toxicity guidelines of megadosing should
be observed.
