Workout Questions - Building Muscle and
Losing Weight For Moms
Workout Question: I am a mom to 3 kids under the age of 5 and find it
very difficult to exercise with the kids. I quit smoking (1/2 pack to one pack
a day) 6 months ago. I have gained 12 pounds since quitting and cannot get the
weight off. I am currently on a 1200 calorie diet and squeeze in a 30 minute bike
ride 2 times a week if I am lucky. I have been following the diet closely with
one exception. I have replaced my cigarette addiction with a Diet Coke addiction.
I drink one large Diet Coke from McDonalds every day. I crave the sweetness that
I could not stand prior to quitting. I cannot drop an ounce on this plan. Is my
metabolism off kilter or is it the Diet Coke? What can I do in addition to adding
cardio exercise to help me lose the weight? I am getting very aggrevated and fear
returning to the nasty habit of cigarettes.
Workout Answer: Remember, the best way to lose body fat is to add elements
that burn extra calories when you're just sitting around. The best element to
add is the most metabolic tissue in your body, lean muscle tissue and the best
way to add additional muscle to your body is through strength training. Begin
a weight training routine 3 times a week and focus on basic free weight movements
such as bench press, squats, barbell curls and triceps push downs. These core
exercises will build quality muscle which will burn more calories and give your
body a drastic change in composition. You can review our weight training exercise

Don't worry too much about the diet coke. 1 large
a day is fine, if this hits your sweet tooth. Just make sure you drink at least
a gallon of water every day along with your diet coke. Congrats on kicking the
cigarettes! This is a huge accomplishment and you should be very proud of yourself.
