Push ups can build a little mass. I started a 100 push ups a day challenge last year, and this was hard for me. I weight 95kg (15 stone). The most noticeable change was in triceps, arms really bulked up from those push ups. So they can build some bulk, but probably only if you are a bit overweight!

OK, now I am being pedantic - but why do we call them calories? The numbers we are talking about are actually kcal aren't they? That's surely a thousand calories?

I agree, take it easy. Jumping into a military intensive routine will be a massive shock to your system. Do not eat too much before working out, and do not drink too much water while training. Avoid the fizzy sports drinks totally. Listen to your body while training, but don't give up!
