Republican Or Democrat
In Britain we have many political parties like Labour, Conservative, Liberal Democrat, UKIP, Green, etc, but in America it seems to be the will of constitution to have just two.
Why does America only permit two, when greater choice might be more perferable to voters, because some people could start their own parties, providing they passed some basic criteria and then could devise their own policies and providing they had the money, pay for one or more party political broadcasts.
Strange way of doing it, to restrict peoples right to choose to just 2 options, because it hardly promotes much democratic capability amongst the populous in that respect.

Re: Republican Or Democrat
We have more than 2 parties boss. But yes republican and democrat are the largest. our govenor of minnesota for 4 years about 12 years ago was jessie ventura (a former wrestler) and an independent. But that happens rarely. I don't really know why people never vote for other parties and stick to the two parties. But they do including myself. I've never voted for a republican in life. Always a democrat. Although i have issues with some things the democrats stand for too i figure it's the lesser of two evils.
Re: Republican Or Democrat
Well yes independants are present in Britain too, but they usually stand alone, otherwise they would have a party name and be one of several candidates fiedled in multiple constituencies.
Why other people don't start political parties in America and have say at least 10 states they run Governers for, I don't understand, but that's an individuals choice.
Yes, I'm aware of Ventura actually and he was also in the films Running Man and Predator.

Re: Republican Or Democrat
I agree though the 2 party system doesn't seem to be working so well.
Re: Republican Or Democrat
Hmmmmm...politics, most favorite subject..NOT~!
Unfortunately Boss Man one must register as a Democrat or a Republican, it's a necessary evil, otherwise you really don't have a voice in choosing the candidates who eventually run for office. In most states you cannot participate in primaries as an independent, unaffiliated voter. Regardless of party affiliation, the saddest part of the political system is the lack of facts, or should I say the flagrant disregard for truths by BOTH main parties. The majority of "voters" really don't have any clue to what is truly happening in our government, or in the world........it's scary I don't profess to understand it all - but I do know that I do not believe everything that is written and certainly not what each candidate says about the other. We need less government and our political leaders need to abide by the same rules they impose on the rest of us - how can they possibly understand when they themselves are exempt from so much. And it seems getting re-elected is more important than doing the right thing

Re: Republican Or Democrat
I'm not sure if the tea party considers themselves a separate political party or not, or just a group of republicans (which is what it is).
Re: Republican Or Democrat
All I can say is… It’s all about Money!!! Unfortunately both republican and democratic are the biggest parties with the most money so they are everywhere!!! I mean look at all the money they are spending for campaigning just to be popular & get votes! While others are getting lay offs and school are getting budget cuts! Where is the green party or independent party at? Oh, no where to be found because they don’t have enough money to campaign!

Re: Republican Or Democrat
i don't know the specifics but i would bet money that the democrats and republicans make it harder for other parties to campaign somehow..... i think it would be a harder choice if there was more selection of political parties. I would welcome it. also it would give the two parties less power...

Re: Republican Or Democrat
I vote conservative every time, though it was admittedly the culture I grew up with in the family home as a child, but it's always seemed like the best choice for me.
The last government we had which was Labour was terrible and screwed Britain up and on their own, not in a coalition as we currently have, the Liberal Democrats are a third string party, that come third all the time in general elections and have had no rule in Britain unless you go back quite a way before the second world war began.
Most other parties in Britain are just fringe parties with no real clout, but occasionally one wins a seat and get's an MP, (Member of Parliament), into Westminster, but generally it's usually the main 3 battling it out for seats, with the Lib Dem's coming third every time.
Personally I wouldn't care if the nation had several parties or just 2, because as long as one of the parties was conservative I'd be happy.
Although, as you say, to have more parties in your country is surely a democratic thing to have and maybe if one or two more came along, the established order would potentially be shaken up and it would make things more interesting.

I think conservative in the UK is much more liberal than conservatives and right wingers here in the states. But I'm just guessing on that.

Re: Republican Or Democrat
America has tons of political parties: Republican, Democrat, Independent, Socialist, Working Families, Libertarian, and Green just to name a few. The government doesn't dictate how many parties there are However, due to the society's complete and utter inability to be moderate on any given issue, most people label themselves either Democrat or Republican and then gleefully stick to their ideological guns in the face of opposition, relational issues, and even cold, hard facts. If people would be willing to branch out a bit and vote with their minds rather than with their assholes, the political landscape in America might be a very different place.
Re: Republican Or Democrat
Interesting point. I quite and freely admit wrongly, believed America was a mostly two horse political affair, with the occasional outsider or two fighting against a sea of long-term convention / ideologies and also apathy towards difference, so I was not that aware that although it's like that, the outsiders are greater in number than some might think.

Re: Republican Or Democrat
Americans have really kind of foisted the two party system upon themselves, for the reasons I stated in post. We've gotten lazy, people just mindlessly read articles and watch the TV networks that reinforce their views. They never question how they arrived at their views, they never entertain the idea even for a second that maybe the other side has something to offer, and they never give any quarter - hence the not-so-gradual slide into extremism on both sides of the aisle. It's quite sad and frustrating. I tend to fall on the conservative side on economic issues, but I also see the points that liberals make on those same issues. At the same time, I'm very liberal when it comes to a lot of social issues, and identify as a feminist which puts me at odds with the very white, Republican party.Boss Man wrote:Interesting point. Typically, third party candidates do have to fight upstream against the things you mentioned in your post. People might feel like voting for them, but then they end up voting for the Democrat or the Republican because a vote on a third party candidate is essentially a wasted vote. It sucks that a country that is as large and diverse as the United States has two such narrow boxes that everyone tries to fit into.
