I typically much prefer a gym workout. In order to replicate all the equipment available, and modifying exercises to adjust for what you don't have, easier to go to the gym and have it all there and available. Then, as strength increases, or I want to try something new, I don't have to invest in any new equipment - it's all already there. Plus, sometimes seeing what someone else is doing can provide some inspiration for ideas, and its a little motivating to be around other people who care about their fitness.
That being said, can you get a great workout in at home? Of course you can.
