I do understand that, and I am sorry you are living below the poverty line. I have been there myself and it is difficult, to understate things! Even things like peanut butter can be healthy on an apple. I know you now realize that a meal and a snack is starving your body and you need more to accomplish your needs.
I can offer this advice.... If you plan each meal on a weekly basis so that left overs from larger meals can be used as other meals then you can make your dollar stretch a little farther. For example, making a pan of lasagna with sauce and meat and a small portion of cheese and portioning it into 8 pieces so it can make 8 meals is a smart thing to do. A piece of lasagna and a cup of carrot sticks is filling and nutritious! Lasagna can also be frozen in its portion size and be reheated after its thawed at a later date.
making your own soups is also fairly cheap and nutritious as well and having it with a grilled cheese sandwich is tasty (use the butter sparingly, lol)
Money is not free flowing for family right now either... I am on disability right now so know I understand. I make a lot of foods by hand because it is cheaper. Learning how and following recipes can be fun and rewarding and planned into a budget.
A simple treat is a diced up apple with a tsp. of honey and some cinnamon mixed up over a light pancake for breakfast or a snack.
I guess what I am trying to say, is plan around food sales in the grocery store fliers for your meal plans for the week, with a little creativity and a bit of flare in the kitchen you can make 50 dollars a week in groceries go a long way. As you get better at it you may even be able to cut that back some. Learning how to budget a healthy diet isn't easy but definitely worth it and I know you have the willpower and courage to meet that learning curve!!
I am here to ask questions of and you can even send me messages on account if you don't want them publically displayed. I wish you only the best success!

Re: swimming for weight loss
I love swimming for exercise. I do it a lot in winter when it's cold and wet outside. Helps me lose weight and keeps me in a good mood
