McCartney Malak – Fitness Model Interview

Can you tell us a little about yourself and your background?
I was born in Kingston, New York, which is only 20 minutes from where I live now. I come from a huge family. I am the third out of six children. I have 4 sisters and one brother. I attended Rondout Valley High School. I am currently a junior at SUNY New Paltz studying sociology with a concentration in criminology.

How and why did you get started in fitness?
I have always been very athletic. From when I was five, my parents had me in soccer and softball. As I grew up and became the age where I could start modified sports for school, I played field hockey and softball. I played all throughout middle school and high school. After high school, I realized I couldn’t rely on sports anymore and I needed to get myself a membership to the gym. So I did. Ever since getting that membership, I have always been trying new workouts which added a lot of motivation. From there on, I saw results I wanted to see and kept going.


What is the best thing about being fit and living a healthy lifestyle?
The best part of being fit and healthy is feeling like you have accomplished something you have been waiting for. It is a reward for yourself and feels so good. You feel like you are on top of the world. Sometimes it is hard getting up and going about your day, and working out helps me. If I am stressed, I go to the gym, put on music that pumps me up, and go about my day. It really motivates me. I love food and eat everything! Eating the food I love, working out and looking good in my clothes makes me feel so good.

Tell us about your biggest fitness influence?
The person who influences me the most is Katya Elise Henry. She is fairly new to the fitness world but she has always worked out and she has awesome workouts that I follow. She has also given me some very good tips to use at the gym along with tips about my eating habits. She motivates me and I have never even met her! She has taught me throughout her workouts to never give up and you will get where you want to be if you really believe it in yourself first.

What is your greatest achievement so far?

When I am at the gym, some people will come up to me and say, “Wow, how can I get to look like you and what are your workouts?” I love teaching others and showing them they can do exactly what I do. You just have to be positive and tell yourself that you can do it.

What is your favorite body part on yourself and on the opposite sex?
My favorite body part is definitely my booty! I have always had a booty but with new workouts it looks so much better and I love it! On the opposite sex, I definitely love muscles. They are such a turn on!

What kind of cardio do you like best and why?
I used to run a lot more than I do now. I would run outside, on the track, and at the gym! Instead of running, I walk on the treadmill at an incline. It does the same as running and believe me, you will work up a sweat!

What type of nutritional supplements do you use?
I have never used nutritional supplements because I believe you don’t need them to make yourself look and feel good. When you workout, you should feel good. Definitely drinking a lot of water always helps too!

What do you think of the latest fitness trends like P90X, Insanity and CrossFit?
They are all great! Whatever helps someone feel good about themselves is all that matters.

What type of food or supplements do you consume pre-workout and post-workout?
Breakfast is an important meal of the day because it sets the mood for the rest of your day. Avoid sugary and processed foods for breakfast. Start your day off with something healthy and natural. Before my workouts I will eat eggs, fruit, oatmeal, or yogurt. My post-workout meal usually consists of chicken, beef, or fish.


How do you deal with cravings for junk foods, sweets and salty food?
Let’s just say if I want a piece of chocolate, I am going to have that piece of chocolate right then and there. I usually count my calories or I use some of the apps that count them for you. It really helps you stay on track and then you will be able to know how or what else you can eat for the day, especially if you have a calorie count of everything.

What are the contents of your refrigerator?
Ice cream, eggs, chicken and so much more!

What are your top 3 favorite exercises and why?
I really enjoy walking on an incline and squats! There are so many different workouts you can do and they burn so many calories! I love getting a great sweat because it makes me feel like I am doing it right!

What tips do you recommend for eating out at restaurants to stay on a clean diet?
Like I said before, if you want to watch your calories, I suggest you download one of the apps or write it down. Try and see what’s on the menu that could be in your calorie range and never be afraid to ask about the foods you’re ordering!


What does your gym playlist look like and what’s your favorite song to listen to when training?
There is so much music on my phone! I love when I am listening to pump up music because it really makes me feel good. I can listen to anything from Tinashe, All Hands On Deck, to Niykee Heaton and so on! Most of my music really pumps me up!

What is the most challenging thing you deal with about consistently staying in top shape?
Food! Especially fried foods! I love food and it is so hard to stay away from the greasy ones. I will never stop eating all those delicious foods but I just have to watch myself and eat them in moderation.

Please describe your normal diet. What do you eat in a typical day to stay in shape?
It is hard finding foods you like, but here is a little of what I have on a daily basis:

  • Meal #1: Eggs with fruit, or oatmeal with fruit such as blueberries.
  • Meal #2: Wraps (turkey, lettuce, beans, cucumbers) or grilled chicken with black beans, or sushi!
  • Meal #3: Fish (most fish are really good for you), or eggplant.
  • Meal #4: dark chocolate.
  • Meal #5: ice cream.


If you could share only one bodybuilding tip that has really helped you succeed, what would it be?
I have actually never been into bodybuilding at all so I’m not sure what to share.

How does your family, friends and significant other react to and deal with your strict fitness lifestyle?
My friends and family have always supported me no matter what. They have told me to eat what I want and just learn to portion myself. It really helps! I am thankful they are always by my side no matter what!

What are your top 5 tips for losing body fat and getting shredded?

  1. Your mindset. Get focused and tell yourself you will do it.
  2. It’s all about the portions! The main goal is to shrink your stomach. To do so it will depend on not only what you consume but also the amounts.
  3. Reverse your taste buds. As I said before, “It’s all about the portions”. The main goal is to reverse your taste buds so even if you eat a small portion of pasta or pizza, you will still want more and that is torturous. It is almost like you want to get to the point where you no longer enjoy it. But believe me, it is not impossible.
  4. Try and make a new habit and then stick to it. You will start seeing the progress you are putting in. DON’T GIVE UP!
  5. Be smart about cheat foods. Rather than going on a diet, change your lifestyle. Remember you are trying to shrink your stomach and when you eat something like a huge meal for your “cheat day” it will only reverse the process and make it harder for you to continue eating healthy.

What are your top 5 tips for building muscle and packing on size?

  1. Attack the weights.
  2. Eat less carbs.
  3. Do cardio.
  4. Protein, protein and more protein!
  5. Get a good night’s sleep.


What is your training routine like?

  • Monday: legs and glutes
  • Tuesday: rest day
  • Wednesday: a quick circuit of upper body and abs
  • Thursday: legs and glutes
  • Friday: rest day

What is your favorite healthy food and your favorite cheat food?
Grilled chicken for healthy food and ice cream for cheat food.

How do you stay motivated?
My motivation comes from the people who tell me I push them to go to the gym! That makes me so happy. The rest comes from within. There is always room for improvement and learning new things.

What does the future hold for you?
I hope to continue to inspire people and finish school! I will keep up my fitness because I love doing what I do! I hope for people to reach out to me if needed at any time! I love meeting new faces and helping as many people as possible!
