Angela’s Weight Loss Interview!
How much did you lose?
I lost over a 100 pounds and went from a size 18 to a size 6!
When did you become unhappy with your weight (were you overweight as a child or did you gain weight as an adult)?
I’m a two-time cancer survivor. The second cancer caused rapid weight gain. All of the chemotherapy and radiation treatments put both cancers into remission but it left me battered with heart failure (cardiomyopathy), kidney function loss, atherosclerosis, pre-diabetes, high blood pressure, weight gain of 100 extra pounds and countless hospital stays with multiple life saving surgeries. These were my challenges by the age of 38 and I didn’t think I could make a comeback from all these daunting problems.
My husband and I started walking and we focused on doing this one day at a time. It was not easy and I had to push past all of the pain from my disease. I cleaned up my diet and gave up soda pop and most sugary foods in order to preserve my kidneys. Soon, I was waking 45 minutes every day and I never let up even though I wanted to. My husband says that by the 6th month of faithful walking he couldn’t keep up with me and after about a year and a half, my body started to feel stronger, so I added hiking 3 to 4 times a week to my walking schedule.
The weight started to come off, on the average 20 to 25 pounds every year to where I am now. I’m free of all the diseases, ailments and conditions I had! All of my doctors state that my internal organs have improved dramatically in such a way that now I’m stronger than ever! I’m so strong that a local cardiologist heard of my story and sponsored to strength train me. He understands the science and benefits behind exercise and I’m on a mission to showcase that “exercise is powerful medicine”!
As of May 2015, I’ve been sponsored by a world champion powerlifter and bodybuilder to start bodybuilding as a natural figure competitor. My story and body is different from most, however I believe it speaks of hope for health to so many people who are suffering with the ailments of obesity. I’m all about invoking a fierce fight in each individual to take back their health with faithful exercise!
What made you decide to lose weight?
In the hope of warding off disease.
What were the most important changes you made to lose weight?
Daily exercise, good nutritional choices and a positive attitude.
What was the most challenging thing you had to deal with during your weight loss journey?
Ailments from heart failure like extreme shortness of breath along with low kidney function that created constant infections and low energy from being obese.
How long did it take you to start to see results?
It took the first year to achieve weight loss and gain more energy. In the second year I had dramatic internal organ improvement. During years 3 to 4 I noticed incredible stamina and year 5 is when I worked on my strength levels.
How long did it take for you to reach your current weight?
How long have you maintained your weight loss and what are the most important factors for keeping it off?
In the last five years it has been a slow and steady lifestyle change and that’s the key to making permanent changes on the inside and out.
What keeps you motivated to continue your weight loss success?
I’ve truly never felt younger and more alive! That’s an extremely valuable commodity I hadn’t experienced before because I was dying with inoperable tumors by the age of 25, so I’m never going to take for granted the gift of health!
How has your life changed now that you have lost weight?
I’m stronger, I have more energy and I’m determined to inspire others!
Do you have any advice for others who are trying to lose weight?
I always tell people to never forget who started the journey because you will ultimately fight to get yourself healthy! Because that’s the bad ass inside of you!
