How much did you lose?
I lost 60 pounds and went from a size 16 down to a size 4!

When did you become unhappy with your weight?
I was always a very thin and active person and I never thought I’d have a problem with weight gain. The weight gain was due to a medication I was prescribed by an irresponsible doctor. I gained 65 pounds in less than a year.

What made you decide to lose weight?
When someone posted a terribly unflattering picture of me online, and it just hit me how unhappy with myself I had become. That was the straw that broke the camel’s back, but before that, lots of things in my life had started to suffer due to my lack of self-care.

What were the most important changes you made to lose weight?
At first I tried a weight loss program where I basically just cut calories and started exercising, but what that did was made me more mindful of my habits. I lost the first ten pounds that way. Then I quit the medication, which I never needed in the first place. I started exercising on a regular basis, which increased to every day as I learned to enjoy it. I stopped sitting on the couch and snacking on cheese. I made a conscious attempt to change my poor attitude and my victim mentality. It was a daily struggle, and I’m still working on it every day.

What was the most challenging thing you had to deal with during your weight loss journey?
Honestly, the hardest part for me has been regaining the confidence that I lost during that time. I developed a lot of bad habits and attitudes, and that is a lot harder to change than losing fat.

How long did it take you to start to see results?
As soon as I started exercising on a regular basis, the weight dropped off at a rate of about 5 pounds per month and slowed down toward the end.

How long did it take for you to reach your current weight?
About three years.

Did you have any issues with loose skin after losing the weight? If so, how did you deal with it?
My skin is a little saggy, especially around the facial area. If it does not improve after a while I may consider surgery.

How long have you maintained your weight loss and what are the most important factors for keeping it off?
I still have about 5-10 pounds to go, so I don’t consider myself done yet. My belly is still flabby. I have learned to love exercise. I crave my long runs, especially in the sun, and I find that I need regular exercise to feel good mentally.

What keeps you motivated to continue your weight loss success?
I know that if I lapse into my bad habits I will again become an unhappy and unhealthy person, and I just would rather be happy and productive. And I love running now so it’s not hard anymore.

How has your life changed now that you have lost weight?
My marriage is better, my relationships are better, and I am generally a happier, more positive person. It’s not a small difference. It is like night and day!

Do you have any advice for others who are trying to lose weight?
It’s not hard to lose weight, it just takes time and consistency. At first, I was so sick that I gave myself credit for just getting my workout clothes on and going outside. The first time I tried to jog around the block, I cried the whole time (and mostly walked). Now I can run for an hour! Just believe that it can happen and it will. Just give it time!

Weight Loss Tip #1:
Small choices add up to big results.

Weight Loss Tip #2:
Keep a chart of your weight. As you see it change, it will be motivating.

Weight Loss Tip #3:
No soda or sugar. Avoid carbs and pasta. This will be hard at first, but gets easier!

Weight Loss Tip #4:
Attitude is everything. Keep your thoughts positive even if it hurts. A gratitude journal is a great exercise!

Drink water, all day long!

Lara’s Weight Loss Eating Plan!

What do you normally eat for breakfast?
Small bowl of oatmeal, and coffee with low-fat milk.

What do you normally eat for lunch?
Sandwich on whole wheat and fruit, or, a salad and tuna.

What do you normally eat for dinner?
I just make sure that there is a balance of protein and vegetables with reasonably sized portions, and I avoid carbs and pasta as much as possible. I also rarely indulge in dessert (maybe twice a year).

What do you normally eat for snacks?
A handful of nuts, or a cup of coffee with milk. I don’t snack much anymore because my appetite has changed since I became healthy.

What type of nutritional supplements do you take?
Multivitamin, vitamin B and D (both really help my mood), and sometimes I take magnesium powder which mixes with water.

What do you do for weight training?
I used to go to the gym, but now I prefer just running and doing push-ups.

What do you do for cardio training?
I love to run for my cardio!
