Mahip’s Weight Loss Interview

How much did you lose?
I lost a total of 119 pounds (54 kg)! My old pant size was 44 and now I wear a size 32, so I lost 12 sizes!

When did you become unhappy with your weight?
I had high blood pressure and breathing problems. I was also unable to focus on my studies due to being so tired, so I knew it was time to change my lifestyle and finally get healthy.

What made you decide to lose weight?
As a teenager, there were a lot of difficulties that I faced being obese. Some of these issues included feeling lethargic and not being able to enjoy being with my friends because I got tired so easily! I also had a lot of problems when traveling on public transportation. Along with those issues, I also had low self-esteem and felt pathetic when trying to fit into clothes and was frustrated not being able to wear the type of fashionable clothing I wanted to.

What were the most important changes you made to lose weight?
Including exercise as a daily routine in my schedule was a big factor! I made it automatic just like brushing
my teeth! I tried different exercises which helped me learn how my body responds to each one. I also closely monitored my food intake and made sure the best nutrients went into my body.

What was the most challenging thing you had to deal with during your weight loss journey?
During my weight loss journey, I was stuck at 187 pounds for a while. I tried many things and was finally able to break that plateau by following a ketogenic low-carb diet.

How long did it take you to start to see results?
It took me around 3 months before I started to see any changes.

How long did it take for you to reach your current weight?
It took me one year to lose all the weight! It took a little longer than usual because of the trial and error approach I took to understand what worked for me and what did not work. Being a student and with a lack of resources, I could not afford a nutritionist or a personal fitness trainer so I had to do everything on my own.

Did you have any issues with loose skin after losing the weight??
I’m very lucky to not have any issues with loose skin after losing the weight.

How long have you maintained your weight loss and what are the most important factors for keeping it off?
I have maintained my weight for about a month and I do it by exercising daily along with following healthy eating habits!

What keeps you motivated to continue your weight loss success?
Looking at myself in the mirror and seeing my clothes fitting so much better now is very motivating! Experiencing an increase in strength and stamina in the gym is also what keeps me motivated!

How has your life changed now that you have lost weight?
I have become so much more fit and active now! My clothes fit me so much better and I have gained back all my self-esteem.

Do you have any advice for others who are trying to lose weight?
Start as soon as possible and don’t make any excuses. Just do it!

Mahip’s Weight Loss Tips

Weight Loss Tip #1:
Crash diet plans do not work! They might help you lose weight in the short-term, but it is usually water weight and lean muscle mass (not body fat). Once you go back to your regular diet, the weight comes back on very quickly. If you want permanent weight loss that you can maintain, follow a healthy diet plan that you can stick with throughout your life!

Weight Loss Tip #2:
No one wants to look “skinny fat”, so you need to put on muscle while losing fat and this can accomplished by lifting weights and eating clean. I followed a low-carb, high protein diet and it works great for me. When you reduce carbohydrates in your diet, your body gets into a state of ketosis and starts burning fat for energy.

Weight Loss Tip #3:
Spot reduction is a myth! You can do 1,000 crunches every day and it will not help you get rid of your belly fat. You need to reduce body fat from all over your physique by following a proper diet and exercise plan.

Weight Loss Tip #4:
Your goal should be to lose body fat and gain lean muscle mass so the scale might not be a true indicator, so it’s probably better to use body fat calipers to accurately calculate your body fat percentage.

Weight Loss Tip #5:
HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) is a workout regime that has helped me lose fat and gain muscle at the same time. There are fitness apps for your phone that you can use at your hotel when traveling or at home without the need to go to the gym.

Mahip’s Weight Loss Eating Plan

What do you normally eat for breakfast?
I have been intermittent fasting for over a year. I skip breakfast each day and eat two meals. The first meal is around 1pm and the second meal is around 8pm. Then, I fast for 16 hours until I start eating again the next day at 1pm. In order to boost my metabolism, I drink lemon water every morning.

What do you normally eat for lunch?
I have two chapatis (flatbread) with mix dal (pulses), boiled chicken or fish with a lot of veggies.

What do you normally eat for dinner?
I have two chapatis (flatbread) with 4 egg whites and two whole eggs and make an omelet with a salad.

What do you normally eat for snacks?
I eat sprouts, fruits and nuts for snacks.

What type of nutritional supplements do you take?
I currently do not take any supplements.

Mahip’s Weight Loss Workouts

What do you do for weight training (exercises, workouts)?
I train for a minimum of one hour, six days a week. I try to perform HIIT training in every workout. I also try to have active rest sessions in between different sets during my workout.

What do you do for cardio training (exercises, workouts)?
I sprint for 1 minute at the maximum speed possible followed by 30 seconds at a slower speed. I do my sprints in between my weight training sessions.
