    Nolan’s Weight Loss Interview

    How much did you lose?
I lost 8 inches off my waist and a total of 85 pounds!

When did you become unhappy with your weight?
I started becoming overweight when I was around 8 years old. Every year it felt like I just got bigger and bigger. I love playing basketball and reached a point when I would hold my shirt while running so my stomach didn’t hang out. Also, I got winded so easily and had zero self confidence. By the time I was a freshman in high school I reached my highest weight of 250 pounds and felt completely terrible about myself.

What made you decide to lose weight?
My mom lost 150 pounds by eating meat and vegetables and it seemed to change everything about her life and her overall happiness so I decided I could either sit around and be unhappy about being fat or work hard and do something about it.

What were the most important changes you made to lose weight?
First I started eating better, cutting out a lot of carbs and eating very little sugar. I started seeing the weight fall off pretty quickly. I remember when I took a vacation to Disney World for a week that summer and was so worried about gaining weight. I tried to make all the right choices and when I got home I was down 10 pounds that week. I started doing research and decided I wanted to add working out and weight lifting to my routine. With research, I started writing down workouts for myself, but was struggling to get to the gym. I didn’t have my drivers license yet so I had to rely on family to take me and was not able to be consistent so that was kind of put on hold. In March 2020, when the Covid quarantine hit, I convinced my parents to let me turn part of our garage into a gym and they invested in some workout equipment for me. I have written down every one of my own workouts and am out there a couple hours per day (6 days per week). I found my passion and when I started seeing my abs develop, I was so happy!

What was the most challenging thing you had to deal with during your weight loss journey?
Being a teenager, I feel very lucky to have my family’s support. It was really hard to not be able to get to the gym when I wanted to. It also can be hard at times when I’m out with friends who eat differently than I do. Now I have a job working in a grocery store so some days I’m fitting in my workouts at 9pm. I never miss a workout though!

How long did it take you to start to see results?
I saw results pretty fast! My mom and I kept shopping for smaller shorts after only a couple of months. I started with a 40” waist and now I’m down to a 32” waist!

How long did it take for you to reach your current weight?
I started in June of 2019 and by March of 2020 I was down to about 165 pounds. I’ve gone up and down a bit trying to build more muscle mass.

Did you have any issues with loose skin after losing the weight?
I’m thankful for my age and my skin’s ability to go back to how it would have been.

How long have you maintained your weight loss and what are the most important factors for keeping it off?
I’m currently following the MyFitnessPal app to track calories and macros and I’m working out daily. It hasn’t been too hard to maintain.

What keeps you motivated to continue your weight loss success?
I feel so good and have so much more confidence! That is my motivation 🙂

How has your life changed now that you have lost weight?
I have found my passion! I hope to go to college and major in athletic training or exercise science and ultimately achieve my Doctorate in Physical Therapy. This has been a life changing experience for me in so many ways and I hope to pay it forward and help change the lives of other people.

Do you have any advice for others who are trying to lose weight?
Just do it, don’t put it off and don’t give up! Time will pass and you can either be happy with your progress or disappointed that you quit.

How did ShapeFit help you reach your weight loss goals?
Reading ShapeFit’s articles has really helped motivate my success!
