More and more people struggle to stay healthy. People are finding it harder and harder to integrate exercise into their lives, to manage stress and to maintain their weight. Headlines in various medical journals feature skyrocketing cases of obesity and diabetes. It was declared that life expectancy in the United States has dropped to last place among all developed countries in the world. In almost any analysis concerning health trends, the data demonstrates that lifestyle behavior accounts for 50% of a person’s overall health. This means that lifestyle accounts for 50% of the overall causes of the increased mortality rate. Genetics influence 20%, access to health care 10% and environment 20%. Surely, we can still improve our lives by following a fitness plan.

The importance of a fitness plan cannot be overstated. Our bodies are designed to move. At a cellular level, things begin to go awry when we succumb to a sedentary way of life. A fitness plan is essential and consists of three components, namely: (1) Cardio-respiratory; (2) Flexibility; (3) Strength. A solid fitness plan is made up of 30 to 60 minutes per day of activity ranging from moderate intensity to high intensity. Aerobic activities are performed most days of the week for 20-30 minutes, with 5-10 minutes of flexibility exercises and 15 to 20 minutes of resistance training exercises like lifting free weights or using machines. In doing resistance exercises, the five big muscles of the body should be targeted and these include the back, abdomen/core, shoulders, chest and thighs.

A fitness plan helps to accomplish virtually any health goal you may be striving toward. Having a fitness plan is the most significant predictor not only of shedding off pounds, but also of maintaining weight. Of people who have shed off significant amounts of weight and maintained it over the long haul, over 50% engage in regular exercise. Following a fitness plan significantly reduces the risks of developing diseases such as diabetes and cancer. It also helps improve memory, mental alertness and mood. A fitness plan is a diet and exercise program that guides you toward having balanced workouts and nutrient dense meal plans.

Why is Learning from Others Important?
People we encounter every day have a vault of knowledge and experiences that we can learn from. People such as experienced bodybuilders, fitness trainers or even ordinary individuals who have already lost weight can be significant and reliable advisers of effective fitness plans, workout routines and nutritional programs. We can also learn from others about what works and what doesn’t. They can share with us all of the failures and struggles they had to go through in order to get to where they are now.

Learning and gaining knowledge is the key to success. Learning can be achieved in a formal or informal way. Formal learning is acquired through education while informal learning is obtained through interaction with other people. These people may have greater expertise that may potentially help you to achieve your goals faster.

In health and fitness, it is important to seek the help of professionals, particularly prior to starting an exercise program. These health and fitness professionals can provide assistance and advice on what form of exercise would benefit you the most. They can also teach you the proper execution of exercises and provide effective workouts along with important training tips to avoid injuries.
