Saving The Next Generation – Teaching Our Kids About Health

Facebook Twitter Pinterest LinkedIn Tumblr Email

As parents, we want the best for our children. We want to see them happy and healthy so they can live a long life. With that said, our children learn what they live. If they are being raised in a violent home with parents yelling and swearing, then they will eventually think that behavior is normal and do that themselves. If they are in a negative environment, they will grow up with that type of negativity. We can’t afford to let our children be educated by television, peers, video games, music or anything else. Parents need to be a positive role model, not a negative influence.

It’s time for us to wake up and educate our children about the extreme importance that exercise and healthy eating does for their overall health and well-being. We need to be our children’s guide, especially when they are young and vulnerable. We can’t expect their school to teach them everything that is important in life. When our children are little, we explain to them about things that can harm them, don’t we? We also need to explain to them about things that are good for them as they get older.

Unhealthy eating and the lack of exercise is a path to failure in many directions. A study in the New England Journal of Medicine reported that more than 9 million overweight children are predisposed with depression and a negative self-image. They are also at risk for high blood pressure and diabetes. Are there not enough problems for our children to face in society today than to add more issues that come with being overweight? Many children turn to drugs, alcohol and suicide because of their depression.

fat-obese-kids-childrenDepression which could be caused from the lack of self-esteem, no confidence and others treating them poorly because of how they look or dress. Every child that walks on this planet should feel as though they are special and feel that they have a purpose in life. They should feel that someone believes in them and cares about them. We owe it to all the children of the world to make the world a better place for them before our time is up.

What does it take for many of us as parents to realize it’s a responsibility we must not take lightly and educate our children about nutrition and exercise? First thing we need to do is set a good example for them how we live, the foods we choose to eat, things we say, things we do, how we treat other people, how we respond to conflict and how we face adversity to name a few things. We can’t expect our children not to swear if we do. We can’t expect our children to be positive if we are negative. If we eat poorly and don’t exercise, we can’t expect our children to eat healthy and exercise. We need to help our children understand that everything we do or don’t do, can have consequences. Set positive examples so that our children have positive emotions and lives.

It seems we can tell where we are going if we look at our past. Much of mankind in general seems self-destructive. You can’t turn on the news without hearing of another horrible atrocity against an innocent human being. What causes so many people to do such terrible things to others? We are not born that way. As a small child, we know nothing about hate, lust, greed, envy, slander, gossip, racism, vanity and other things that cause people to lose their way in life. We are all born with a free will, a soul and decisions to make throughout our lives. Hopefully all of us adults can help give our children good direction.

We are bombarded with things that influence us in many ways that we don’t even realize. We usually see in advertisements people who are fit and trim. Take the show “Deal or No Deal”. Do they have one person holding a case on stage that is overweight? What kind of message are they sending? Pick up a fitness magazine and you will see tons of advertisement with people in perfect shape which in turn influences some people who, if they use their product will look like the person in the ad. Children are easily influenced, so it is up to us, as parents, to help guide them to make the best choices in life and to understand how their choices will affect their lives.
